Cities: The Hybrid Reality

Join us Tuesday, September 9th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Robert Clark, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Hajim   School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester.  He earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., and joined Duke University's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science in 1992.

During Clark's 16 years of service at Duke, he contributed to the institutions mission in numerous capacities. Clark founded Duke's Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Material Systems, where, with modest seed funding, he established a multimillion dollar program involving more than two dozen faculty members. He also held the Thomas Lord Professorship of Engineering and served as Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering before joining the faculty at the University of Rochester.

Cities have long served as representations of our culture and are experienced through participation.  Access to the internet and the emergence of social networks provide alternative ways to experience that culture in layers that blend reality with virtual experiences.  Through data science, we now have alternative methods of viewing and describing a city or community in real time.  An example based upon research at the University of Rochester will be provided as a basis for the discussion.

President Tracy's Journal

What a great meeting this past Tuesday with "Lights! Camera! Your film commission in Action!" presented by our guest speaker Nora Brown Executive Director at the Rochester Finger Lakes Film and Video Office.

Nora talked about why Rochester is a desired location for film shoots, commercials, music videos and even TV shows.

Nora talked about our community's skilled crew labor and production houses. She noted that the skilled crews were largely influenced by Kodak - when Kodak created a new film line the product was tested in the Rochester area first so it was actually Rochesterians that would in-turn teach other production companies how to use the film.

She also went over the film incentives that are offered by the state to film makers that shoot in the Finger Lakes region and why this is so helpful in pitching to potential producers. We learned about the economic impact Spiderman brought our community and those that benefited within the community. Nora's industry experience and understanding of this business is a major plus to the job and we have many other projects in the pipe line - what a benefit to Rochester!

Mark Armbruster let us know about an exciting upcoming fellowship shooting event! I hope many of you can join us on Thursday, September 25th for this fun event. Thank you to Mark and Julie St. Germaine for sponsoring the event.

We also introduced four new members to Rotary since last month - Great job membership committee, you are on a roll!

Have a great Weekend .....

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

The Membership Committee's mission is to grow and sustain the Rochester Rotary Membership. We accomplish this by identifying and recruiting a diverse group of qualified new members and support their initial involvement in the Club.

Each year our Club has a goal to bring in 35 new and dynamic members. At present we have 339 members of our club. Under the leadership of Mary Lewis Consler the committee engaged in a strategic planning process that will help the committee be even more proactive. The strategic plan has a number of sub committees that are listed below:

Under Represented - we have a number of member categories that could use increases.   A good example is military.

Marketing Collaboration - working with our marketing committee this sub group will assist with additional materials that will help with recruitment.

Corporate Membership - this has been a goal for a long time and we will be working directly with each of the larger corporations in this region on corporate memberships. Each new person must pass our membership criteria.

Small Business - this is a specific effort to attract new members that are business owners.

Internal Communications - this effort will see the Membership Committee reaching directly out to other members of our club for  referrals.

You will hear more about these initiatives over the course of the new-year. The Membership Committee is excited about the formation of the Engagement Committee lead by Steve Hoitt.

To recommend a new member please contact Mary Lewis Consler at 310-7113 or Scott Rasmussen at 273-5932.

What is going on in the district?

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) opportunity to New Zealand

The Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotarians and spouses.  The RFE provides participants with the opportunity to experience other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians in other countries and experiencing their district. In turn, their Rotarians visit our district and are hosted by our Rotarians.

Our district has been invited to participate in a RFE with New Zealand District 9940 in the lower half of the north island. District 9940 consists of 59 Rotary Clubs and is the best mix of rural and city life including Wellington, the New Zealand capital city.

The exchange will begin with a visit to D9940 for a period of two weeks from February 14 - 27, 2015.  February usually is their most settled weather for the year including long evenings with daylight savings time - our winter is their summer.

There will also be the possibility, for those interested, to consider pre-RFE and/or post-RFE trips to other parts of New Zealand or other stops such as Hawaii for anyone that would like additional warmer weather during our coldest and dark time of the year.

If you have any questions or an interest in participating in the trip to New Zealand, contact Carl Grovanz, [email protected] or any of our other District 7120
