Coast Guard 101

Join us Tuesday, July 15th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be U.S. Coast Guard Commander Joseph P. Higgins.

Commander Higgins currently serves as Deputy Commander of Sector Buffalo, New York. He oversees Coast Guard missions from Massena, New York to Lorain, Ohio while performing as the Alternate Captain of the Port, Alternate Federal Maritime Security Coordinator and Alternate Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator.

The subject of this presentation is a general introduction to Coast Guard operational responsibilities and how they are conducted in the greater Western New York area, which is the USCG Sector Buffalo area of responsibility. This area includes Lake Ontario, most of Lake Erie, and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

President Tracy's Journal

WOW what a true sense of welcome I felt for my first meeting! It was a thrill for me to share you with my family and friends and vice versa, I know. Now I too promise to have all of you sit down when appropriate (It's harder than it looks!).

I must say that I was complemented by what a warm, social and dedicated group all of you are from friends that were aware of Rotary but had not been to one of our meetings. I made this observation with a great sense of pride. The goal of my first meeting was to "ignite" interest and spirit in keeping with Gary C.K. Huang's theme "Light Up Rotary" (Ironic how that evening my lights went out for several hours!).

I do believe with the announcement of our new Tree House for the Sunshine Campus and Don's extraordinary heartfelt presentation about our Campus's history and his personal experience with our campers was the icing on the cake! The meeting with its 170 in attendance was over the top! Thank you CMI for the audio visual support. We gave each attendee a beautiful wooden ornament made in collaboration with Holy Childhood in honor of our Tree House. Thank you Donna Dedee for your work and coordination of this.

Additionally we gave those in attendance an organizational chart and encouraged individuals to reach out to their board if indeed they had specific questions (visit www.rochesterrotary.org for more information on this).

Mr. Floreano's presence meant the world to me as we celebrated lunch in my home away from home, The Riverside Convention Center. As well as Don Jefferies and VisitRochester staff!

Lee Kirk gave us a whimsical rundown of all the great works that the fellowship committee has come up with for the next several months (Yeah Lee and team!). Jeff Bartkoski, CEO of Mercy Flight Operations,   is looking for host home's for a few visiting students ( July 29-Aug. 1), if you're able to help please contact him at (585) 396-0584 or jbartkoski@mercyflightcentral.org.

The B2B committee has an upcoming event on July 17th at Seabreeze that sounds just wonderful with a welcome from a member of the Norris family, CEO Mr. Rob Norris which is a real treat!

What's Happening at the Sunshine Campus

This week at the Sunshine Campus we welcomed camp partner group,  the American Diabetes Association.  They will be here for 2 weeks.

This week was their oldest group of campers. It was a great week, they made memories that will last a lifetime.

We look forward to welcoming the youngest kids next week!  The photo above is a belly flop completion at our pool.

Sunshine Campus Tree House

Thousands of local children with paralysis and other physical challenges will soon experience the independence and joy of climbing a tree, with the construction of a fully accessible wooden treehouse at Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus.

Rochester Rotary has announced that we will build a fully accessible wooden treehouse at our campus, the first of its kind in the Finger Lakes region. When constructed, the treehouse will feature wheelchair-accessible ramps, wide platforms, sensory equipment for enhanced learning, a cabin enclosure and tree-top views for campers. Built between eight existing trees at the campus, the treehouse will gradually rise to a maximum height of 12 to 14 feet above the ground.

Host International Rotarian Students

We need volunteers from our Chapter to host students from Russia and Georgia that will be visiting Rochester from July 29 - August 1. The Rotarian students have a planned itinerary of activities in our area, including a visit to the Sunshine Campus. Hosts will be asked to open their homes for three nights (Tuesday - Thursday) and provide breakfast to the students. If possible, hosts will transport students to a central location in our area in the mornings, but if unable the group coordinator can meet all transportation requirements. There are 15 students coming to our community, so we need many volunteers.

If you can host, please contact Jeff Bartkoski (jbartkoski@mercyflightcentral.org or cell phone: 585-313-1766) or the Rotary Office by July 15th with the number of students you are willing to have stay overnight at your home on July 29, 30 and 31.

This is a great opportunity to show our hospitality and support for Rotary International. Thank you.

5th Annual Peter D. Formicola Sunshine Camp Golf Invitational

Invitations are on their way to you! We hope you can join us to support our annual golf tournament at the Sunshine Campus on Monday, August 25th at Midvale Country Club.

To make our tournament a success we are looking for some help from you! We recognize not all companies or individuals can make monetary donations to the event so we also would like to let you know the committee in looking for additional items for our silent auction - items should be valued over $100 and some ideas are (but are not restricted to) sports tickets, show tickets, gift baskets, or gift cards.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!

                                          Memorials

Many thanks to all for the memorial contributions made. Your generosity helps support capital projects and items that continue to make the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus one of the premier camping facilities for people with disabilities in our community.
