Is the Central Library Haunted?

Join us Tuesday, June 3rd at Locust Hill Country Club where our guest speaker will be Sally Snow, Assistant Director of the Monroe County Library System and the Communications Director for the Rochester Public Library.

Sally Snow started her career in the Monroe County libraries at the Brighton Public Library. Prior to working for the Rochester Public Library, she was the director of the Parma Public Library. She holds a Master of Library Science , as well as undergraduate degrees in the fine arts, from SUNY Buffalo.

The presentation will cover some of the history of the Rundel library building, staff stories of strange encounters, the library's featured episode on the SYFY Channel's "Ghost Hunters" and theories on what maybe the causes of the alleged haunting. She has yet to see a ghost in the library, but had  one terrifying encounter in the home of an acquaintance during her teens and never set foot in that house again.  She is sure that there was a rational explanation for the incident,  but better safe than sorry.

Weekly Meeting:  Fellow Rochester Rotarian and new member Keith Elder was the keynote speaker this week.  Keith is the Director of Concert Activities at the Eastman School of Music.  We stole him from the Boston Pops, and he started here in December.  Keith's presentation focused on efforts that are underway to strengthen the Eastman Theater as the cultural anchor of our community by bringing world-class talent to Rochester.  They are truly raising the Eastman Theater to be on the same level as venues in major international cities. Please visit the website below for details on upcoming concerts and events.

Community Service Project:  Once again this year, Rochester Rotarians will beautify Schiller Park on Andrews Street in time for the Rochester International Jazz Festival.  We will be working on the afternoon of Friday, June 13.  Please contact Pat Stack or the Rotary Office for more details and to volunteer.

National Spelling Bee:  Last night, the National Spelling Bee ended in a tie, the first time that has happened in fifty years.  One of the co-winners is Sriram Hathwar, an eighth grader from Painted Post, New York.  Sriram was sponsored by the Corning Rotary Club.  Congratulations to Sriram and the Corning club!

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!

What is going on in the district?

Dear All Rotarians,

I'm certain you have heard about the disaster in Penn Yan. I received the message below from President Diane Krans asking for all of our help. Please consider making a donation to help all of the people and businesses that were damaged by the storm on Wednesday.

Bill Redden
District 7120 web administrator

Jeff and I have had many calls from our Rotary friends offering to help those who suffered losses during this week's flood.  The Penn Yan Rotary Club has established a savings account at Lyons National Bank in Penn Yan where funds can be collected to assist those who have lost much and have the least ability to get back on their feet after this disaster.

As a marvelous expression of youth commitment, the baseball team helped one individual clean out her basement, among those helping was our YEX student, Daan.   How proud we are of him and his character.

Should you individually or as a club like to donate to this fund, send checks to the Rotary Club of Penn Yan, P.O. Box 512, Penn Yan, NY 14527.

Thank you for all that you continue to do in the name of Service above Self.

Yours in Rotary,

Diane

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are fast approaching the end of another Rotary year. The very successful District Conference has just ended and Governor Ellen and the Waterloo Club can take a chance to relax after all of their hard work. With the District Change Over Dinner  less than 2 months away all of us should be making sure each of our Clubs send one or two representatives to this dinner. All of the Club Presidents, and most of the members, know that if you asked Governor Ellen to attend any of your Club's service or fund raising projects she did every. She was there for inductions of new members or to recognize someone with a Paul Harris Fellowship. To show our thanks for all of her efforts it is up to you to sign up for this dinner.

Please make sure you download the attachment below and send in your registration and check quickly so we see if we can set a record for people attending the Change Over Dinner that is being held on Monday June 30th at the Bristol Harbor Resort. The open cash bar will start at 5:30 PM with the dinner to start at 6:30 PM.
