Law Day Luncheon
Keynote Speaker RPD Chief Michael Ciminelli

Join us Monday, May 12th for the 14th Annual Law Day luncheon, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and presentation of the Henry H. Jensen Memorial Award to one of Rochester Police Department's "Unsung Heros" -- Captain Wilson Johnson.

Captain Johnson has been with the Rochester Police Department for 32 years. RPD has provided Wil with many opportunities to connect personally and professionally with his police family along with developing long lasting and meaningful relationships within the community. Wil can often be found attending community meetings, guiding and mentoring co-workers, participating in clean sweep activities and working to assist populations that are underserved, homeless or victims of crime simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is known to be an excellent listener and a patient and tireless advocate.  Wil obtained his Master's Degree in Pastoral Studies from St. Bernard's School of Theology and Ministry and was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Diocese of Rochester.

Reservations are needed as this is a sit down luncheon.  RSVP to Brandi Koch in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x210 or  [email protected].

President Bob's Journal

Don Alhart -This Tuesday, District Governor Ellen Hughes and Past District Governor Jeff Krans presented Don Alhart with the Distinguished Service Award - the highest service recognition given by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  The award is given to Rotarians, who have demonstrated exemplary service to the Rotary Foundation.  Don is the first member in the 102 year history of the Rochester Rotary Club to receive this honor, and only the fourth Rotarian from our district.  Congratulations Don!

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was the keynote speaker at our luncheon meeting.  Joe Wiegand, a Rotarian from Tennessee, delivered a rousing and humorous speech as Theodore Roosevelt.  It's amazing how much Joe knows about T.R.  During his presentation, he also auctioned a teddy bear to raise money for Polio Plus.  Earlier in the day, he spoke for an hour to an assembly of fourth and fifth graders at our adopted school, Roberto Clemente School #8.  I hope everyone enjoyed his presentation.

Breakfast Meeting - On Tuesday morning, Jayne Van Zile delivered an outstanding talk on how to network effectively and with a purpose.  Jayne is very good at meeting and forming relationships with a variety of exceptional people in our community.  During her discussion, she shared with those present how she does it.  The Rotary topic was covered by Stephen Hoitt, who led a discussion pertaining to the work of the New Member Engagement Committee.  Many excellent suggestions and ideas were shared by all present.  This was the first breakfast meeting held at our new location - the East Avenue Wegmans.  I believe the hot breakfast buffet was an improvement over the cold breakfast foods at our prior location.  We will meet at Wegmans again next month on June 3, when the professional development topic will be Career Management by Kathleen Pringle, and the Sunshine Campus will be the Rotary topic covered by Mark Zawacki.

Kevin Flynn- I hope everyone who attended our weekly meeting last week enjoyed the keynote address delivered by Kevin Flynn, a partner in the public relations and advertising firm of Martino Flynn.  It is often said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."  Kevin spoke to us about how he took his passions of mountain climbing - Kevin is one of the few people to have climbed the highest summits on every continent - and flying airplanes, and successfully incorporated them into his business.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing

  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are fast approaching the end of another Rotary year. The very successful District Conference has just ended and Governor Ellen and the Waterloo Club can take a chance to relax after all of their hard work. With the District Change Over Dinner  less than 2 months away all of us should be making sure each of our Clubs send one or two representatives to this dinner. All of the Club Presidents, and most of the members, know that if you asked Governor Ellen to attend any of your Club's service or fund raising projects she did every. She was there for inductions of new members or to recognize someone with a Paul Harris Fellowship. To show our thanks for all of her efforts it is up to you to sign up for this dinner.

Please make sure you download the attachment below and send in your registration and check quickly so we see if we can set a record for people attending the Change Over Dinner that is being held on Monday June 30th at the Bristol Harbor Resort. The open cash bar will start at 5:30 PM with the dinner to start at 6:30 PM.
