Where Inequality Comes From

Join us Tuesday, April 8th at Locust Hill Country Club where our guest speaker will be David Cay Johnston, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, an IRE Medal and the George Polk Award.

David Cay Johnston was one of the first to identify how government policy increases inequality.  A Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, he is a best-selling author and teaches at Syracuse University College of Law.  He has lived in Brighton for 21 years.

President Bob's Journal

Service Fellows:  Congratulations to our newest Rochester Rotary Service Fellows!  Our club created this award this year to recognize the significant contributions of time and talent volunteered by our members in furtherance of our club's activities.  When Rochester Rotarians accumulate 50 hours of volunteer service, they will become a Service Fellow.  Our members truly live up to the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."  None sought this recognition, but each deserves it.  Congratulations to:

·      Don Alhart, who worked passionately for many months to make the Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner a fantastic tribute to the women pioneers in Rotary, and an event Rochester Rotary was proud to host.  Don also has been delivering wonderful presentations about the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus in support of the community phase of our capital fundraising campaign.

·       Pat Coakley, who served as Co-Chair of our School #8 Scholarship Program.  Pat has devoted many hours organizing events and mentoring our scholarship students.

·       Mary Lewis Consler, who has provided outstanding leadership to our Membership Committee, recruiting more new members to our club each year than most Rotary clubs have in total membership.  Mary also has been taking donors on guided tours of the Sunshine Campus.

·      Tim Cook, who volunteers his marketing talents in support of many club activities.  He was instrumental in the redesign of the Sunshine Campus logo, and the creation of our new tagline "Where Kids Have No Barriers To Fun."  Tim also has developed a marketing strategy to support the community phase of the capital campaign.

·       Beth Cross-Wilhelm, who volunteers in support of all of our activities at Roberto Clemente School #8.

·       Kathleen Pringle, who poured her heart and soul into the silent auction at the RADA Sunshine Kids Gala.  Kathleen coordinated the silent auction, and personally secured a perfect assortment of auction items covering the spectrum of price points and appealing to all our guests.

Education Program Series:  Rotarians who attended the luncheon meetings the past two weeks will attest that we were treated to two outstanding presentations about successful efforts, which improved city education in Los Angeles and Buffalo, including plans to replicate one of those programs in Rochester beginning this Fall.  This week, Dr. Yvonne Minor Ragan spoke to us about how the worst performing Buffalo City School was transformed into one of the most improved public schools in New York State.  They faced many of the same challenges faced by the Rochester City School District, and overcame them by working within the union contract, training teachers, emphasizing a culture of respect for both teachers and students, cleaning up the neighborhood around the school, and involving parents.

Last week, our keynote speakers shared with us their experiences forming and administering charter schools in Los Angeles, and their plans for PUC Achieve Charter School, which will open in Rochester this Fall.  We also met Adriana Abich, who will be the Principal of this new school.  They will begin with one hundred fifth graders, and add a grade each of the next three years, as those students progress through middle school.  Eventually, PUC Schools intends to add an elementary school and a high school, so students can attend PUC Achieve from kindergarten through graduation from high school.  It is our hope that the recent series of programs on city education will lead to some fresh ideas, which will make a difference and lead to significant improvement in the Rochester City Schools, including our adopted school.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's
"PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each yea  r. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
