Partnerships to Uplift Communities
(PUC)

Join us Tuesday, March 25th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speakers will be Jacqueline Duvivier Castillo, Director of Business & Development at PUC Achieve Charter Schools National, Edward Vandenberg, Director of National School Expansion and Adriana Abich one of the founding  principals of the school.

Partnerships to Uplift Communities (PUC) National is a non-profit 501(C)3 charter school development and management organization. In 1999, PUC Schools created its first public charter middle school to provide a more desirable public school option for the high need community of the NE San Fernando Valley. Due to the success of this first school, and in response to community demand, there are now 13 PUC charter schools serving over 4,000 students in 1 elementary, 7 middle, and 5 high schools in Northeast Los Angeles and the Northeast San Fernando Valley.  PUC will be opening its first school out of state in Rochester, NY in August of 2014.

The presentation will be to share with the community the plans of PUC National to open PUC Achieve Charter School.  The school will open in August 2014 with 100 5th graders serving the Northeast Quadrant.

President Bob's Journal

Dr. "Del" Smith, the City Commissioner of Neighborhood and Business Development, was our keynote speaker this week.  He explained the new administration's focus and priorities, and described exciting plans and projects that are in the works.  Del also expressed his admiration for Rotary, and specifically touched upon our four-way test.  This prompted Past President John White, and a few other Rotarians, to offer up a four-way test coin as an additional gift to our speaker.  At the urging of Club Vice President Ellen Wagner, we also might have a new member in Del.  To learn more about Del, check out this week's issue of the Rochester Business Journal.

Mayor Lovely Warren taped a special message to Rochester Rotarians.  A link to that message was sent to you on Tuesday in an email message from Heather Rossi.  The Mayor originally was scheduled to speak to us this week, but had to travel to Albany to meet with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to fight for Rochester's share of AIM aide in the upcoming State budget.  We are in the process of rescheduling Mayor Lovely Warren's visit to the Rochester Rotary Club.

Our program series on the future of city education resumes next week.  Directors from PUC Achieve Charter Schools National are traveling here from California to speak to us about a new charter school that will open in Rochester this Fall, and the successful model PUC has employed operating a number of charter schools in California.  I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
