"WXXI and The Little - Better Together!"

Join us Tuesday, February 11th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Norm   Silverstein, President and CEO of WXXI Public Broadcasting Co.

Mr. Silverstein will be discussing the future of the Little Theatre in the digital era - and how WXXI's services to the community are "On Air, Online and On Screen."

It's been two years since WXXI took over the operation of The Little at a time when it's future was in doubt.  During that time, 4 of the 5 theaters have been converted to the new digital format, with new screens and sound systems, and work will take place this year on the landmark Theatre 1, which opened in 1929 (in time for The Little's 85th anniversary)!

President Bob's Journal

Breakfast Meeting:   Our monthly breakfast meeting was held this week at the Memorial Art Gallery.  The professional development topic was inbound marketing.  Rochester Rotarian and Chief Marketing Guru Alan Vitberg delivered an informative presentation covering how to attract, convert, close and delight clients and customers using digital media, and he shared some examples with us too.  The Rotary topic this month was our community service teams, and that presentation was delivered by President Elect and Committee Chair Tracy Armstrong.  The monthly breakfast meetings are being offered as an alternative for Rochester Rotarians to meet and connect with each other, because we know that it is not always convenient or possible to attend the weekly luncheon meetings.  The next breakfast meeting will be held on March 4 - the first Tuesday of March.

Luncheon Meeting:   Leslie Whatley, the Executive Vice President of Start-Up NY for the Empire State Development Corp., was the keynote speaker at our luncheon meeting this week.  Leslie spoke to us about Governor Cuomo's new program, which is intended to attract new businesses and accelerate job creation by offering businesses the opportunity to operate completely tax free for ten years.  Leslie explained the details of the program, and then answered many questions.  She argued that the program will not cost the State any money, because it is restricted to new businesses established on properties that currently do not generate any taxes.  She also defended the program as one of many steps being taken by the Governor to change the perception and reality of New York as unfriendly to businesses, due to numerous and high taxes.  The club was very pleased to present this program and information to our members.  Special thanks to Bob Witmer for making it happen.

Recognition:   Past President Mat Adams recognized Past President Jim Isaac and his son Ray Isaac for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to our community, and for being all around first class individuals.  Together, Jim and Ray made a generous contribution to the Rotary Foundation.  Jim and Ray, congratulations and thank you.

Polio Plus:  Please consider making a donation in support of Rotary International's signature project, the eradication of polio worldwide.  So far this year, Rotary clubs in our district, including our cub, have donated $24,460.  Let's help get our district get over the $25,000 mark.  Contributions can be made online at www.rotary.org.  A contribution to the Polio Plus Fund counts towards a Paul Harris Fellowship.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Hank Ralston, the Chair of the Rotary International Foundation Committee.  Thank you.

What is going on in the district?

Members who use roadrunner for their E-mail address.

For any of them who do not receive the monthly newsletter it is imperative that they contact Time Warner and lodge a complaint with them concerning this matter. We do have around 500 Rotarians (or about 20%) who use RoadRunner for their E-mail server so to correct the problem with them for not allowing the monthly newsletter to come through will be a great assistance to many of our fellow members.
