News of YOUR Club
Start-Up NY

Join us Tuesday, February 4th at the Rochester Riverside  Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Leslie Whatley, Executive Vice-President of Start-Up NY for the Empire State Development Corp.  She is globally respected executive with extensive real estate and management experience across multiple industry sectors and geographies.

START-UP NY seeks to accelerate entrepreneurialism and job creation across the state on a large scale, with a particular focus on Upstate New York. The State University of New York campus system, along with other college communities, serves as the framework of the START-UP NY program to attract high-tech and other start-ups, venture capital, new business and investments from across the world.  Under the program, businesses have the opportunity to operate completely tax-free for 10 years on eligible campuses and spaces.  Businesses will partner with the higher education institutions in the SUNY system as well as other universities and be able to access industry experts and advanced research laboratories.

156!

That is the number of Rochester Rotarians, visiting Rotarians and guests who turned out for the New Member Class luncheon meeting on Tuesday.  Ray Isaac was masterful as the moderator of a very entertaining, informative and interesting panel discussion on family businesses.  The panelists were Julie Camardo-Steron of Zweigle's Inc., Andre Langston of WDKX Radio and Rufus Judson of The Pike Company.  The entire New Member Class did an outstanding job planning, promoting and putting on their meeting.  They received tremendous support from their fellow Rotarians.  We can look forward to the talents, passions, energy and ideas of our newest Rotarians being applied in furtherance of the missions of Rochester Rotary.

The New Member Class assembled 15 gift baskets, which were raffled during the luncheon.  Together, we raised $1,800 during the meeting alone.  The class members separately contributed money to purchase a pedal boat and a teepee for the kids to enjoy at the Sunshine Campus.  Thanks to all!

On Wednesday, your Rochester Rotary Club was inducted into the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation's Hall of Fame.  The Rochester Rotary Club is the first not-for-profit to be inducted in the eleven years that the RABEF has awarded the Rochester business ethics award.

2014 Sunshine Award Recipient
Paul DeCarolis

DeCarolis, PaulAt this year's Sunshine Kids Gala being held February 22nd at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center fellow Rochester Rotarian Paul DeCarolis will be honored as the 2014 Sunshine Award Recipient.

This award recognizes someone who shares their time, talent and treasure with the Sunshine Campus. Paul's dedication to the Sunshine Campus and the people served there is matched by few others. Paul is not only a significant monetary contributor to the Campus but his behind the scenes time is immeasurable - he has helped to move significant amounts of donated food to the Campus in a refrigerated truck, moved an entire train and its tracks from Penfield to Rush, provides busing support for our adopted School #8 and much more.

Come show your support, purchase tickets to the 2014 Sunshine Kids Gala today!

Rotary Boot Camp

Membership matters.........

Rotary Boot Camp is a quick "training" on all the "ins" and "outs" of Rochester Rotary.  We ask that all new members attend one session - as well as longtime Rotarians who need a refresher on their Club.

These sessions are both social and informative. Strap up your boots and save the date, we will save you a seat!

 Wednesday, February 12th - 4:30 p.m.

Rochester Rotary Board Room (180 Linden Oaks)

RSVP your attendance to Myrna Padilla in the Rotary Office at 546-7435 x201 or myrna@rochesterrotary.org.

Paul Harris Fellows Challenge!

The Rotary Foundation Committee and Rochester Rotary Paul Harris Fellow members are issuing a challenge to those club members who are not presently Paul Harris Fellows.

For each $100 donated to The Rotary Foundation the Rochester Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow members will match the donation with 100 recognition points.

This means that someone without any donations to the Rotary Foundation at this point could become a Paul Harris Fellow by donating $500.  The donation would be matched, subject to availability, with 500 recognition points, bringing the combined total to 1,000 points from donations and transferred points needed for the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition.

Like all challenges, the time period for donations to be matched ends in just four weeks on February 4th.

Donations must be sent through Hank Ralston of the Rotary Foundation Committee or if made on a direct basis, proof sent to Hank Ralston so he can set up the matching points.

If you have any questions regarding this, please see Hank Ralston, Beth Cross-Wilhelm or Mark Zawacki.

We hope all members who are not already Paul Harris Fellows take advantage of this opportunity to become one and show your support for all the work that The Rotary Foundation does around the world, including here in the US.  Remember that after three years, 50% of your donation comes back to our District and supports local grants as well.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's "PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!
