President Bob's Journal

The keynote speaker this week was Dr. Susan Hildenbrand, an Assistant Professor in Special Education at St. John Fisher's Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education.  Dr. Hildenbrand's presentation on the challenges that poverty can present toward education was very informative.  It also was particularly interesting to our club, since many of our members volunteer at Roberto Clemente School #8 and mentor our scholarship students.  Stay tuned for additional luncheon programs on the subject of city education.

I hope to see you at our annual Soup/Chili/Baked Goods Cook-Off.  We will be meeting this Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 at King's Bend Park, Jefferson Road in Pittsford.  What could be more fun than spending time with friends eating lots of good food?!!

I also am looking forward to the New Member Class meeting on Tuesday at Locust Hill Country Club.  They have done an outstanding job planning this meeting, and the panel discussion is going to be very interesting.  Please come and support them.  It's a great opportunity to discover the backgrounds, businesses and talents of our newest members and future leaders of our club.

2014 Sunshine Award Recipient
Paul DeCarolis

DeCarolis, PaulAt this year's Sunshine Kids Gala being held February 22nd at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center fellow Rochester Rotarian Paul DeCarolis will be honored as the 2014 Sunshine Award Recipient.

This award recognizes someone who shares their time, talent and treasure with the Sunshine Campus. Paul's dedication to the Sunshine Campus and the people served there is matched by few others. Paul is not only a significant monetary contributor to the Campus but his behind the scenes time is immeasurable - he has helped to move significant amounts of donated food to the Campus in a refrigerated truck, moved an entire train and its tracks from Penfield to Rush, provides busing support for our adopted School #8 and much more.

Come show your support, purchase tickets to the 2014 Sunshine Kids Gala today!

Business After Hours
Geva Event

Thirty Rotarians gathered at GEVA for the latest Business After Hours event hosted by the Business to Business Committee.  GEVA provided drinks and hearty hors d'oeuvres as Rotarians and guests mingled before taking a backstage tour of the Last Gas show.  We saw the set being prepared for the night's show, the costume archives and the workshop where many GEVA props are made. Deep in the basement, there was even chronicles of the GEVA building's previous life as Rochester's Convention Center, which hosted four US presidents! Since GEVA Executive Director and Rotarian Tom Parrish was our tour guide, our exclusive tour even included the actors' dressing rooms, the GEVA offices and a sneak peak at the rehearsal for the upcoming show, Clybourne Park, which Tom says is going to be the talk of the town!  Connections were made and fun was had by all.  B2B events are a great opportunity to introduce guests and prospective new members to Rotary! Our next event will be a tour of Eastman Business Park on April 10th...stay tuned!

Paul Harris Fellows Challenge!

The Rotary Foundation Committee and Rochester Rotary Paul Harris Fellow members are issuing a challenge to those club members who are not presently Paul Harris Fellows.

For each $100 donated to The Rotary Foundation the Rochester Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow members will match the donation with 100 recognition points.

This means that someone without any donations to the Rotary Foundation at this point could become a Paul Harris Fellow by donating $500.  The donation would be matched, subject to availability, with 500 recognition points, bringing the combined total to 1,000 points from donations and transferred points needed for the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition.

Like all challenges, the time period for donations to be matched ends in just four weeks on February 4th.

Donations must be sent through Hank Ralston of the Rotary Foundation Committee or if made on a direct basis, proof sent to Hank Ralston so he can set up the matching points.

If you have any questions regarding this, please see Hank Ralston, Beth Cross-Wilhelm or Mark Zawacki.

We hope all members who are not already Paul Harris Fellows take advantage of this opportunity to become one and show your support for all the work that The Rotary Foundation does around the world, including here in the US.  Remember that after three years, 50% of your donation comes back to our District and supports local grants as well.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's "PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!
