News of YOUR Club
Taking stem cell medicine from the laboratory to the clinic for multiple diseases.

Join us Tuesday, January 14th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speaker will be Dr. Mark Noble, Director of the University of Rochester Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute.

The movement of promising laboratory discoveries in the field of stem cell biology from the laboratory to clinical analysis is occurring at an accelerating pace.  Dr. Noble will discuss promising new discoveries for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple types of cancer, and devastating genetic diseases of childhood.   These approaches include the discovery of new properties of established medicines, offering the possibility of rapid clinical transition. He also will discuss the implications of these discoveries for a range of other medical problems.

President Bob's Journal

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Due to the extremely cold temperatures and hazardous conditions, we canceled the breakfast and luncheon meetings this week.  With the holidays, it has been almost a month since our last weekly meeting.  I miss seeing all of you, and am looking forward to our luncheon meeting next week!

Many people make New Year's resolutions.  It's good to look back on the year that just ended, and to set goals for the year ahead.  Our club had a very successful 2013.  In your own special ways, each of you contributes to the success of our club and the impact we have on families with special needs, city youth and our world neighbors.  My hope is that your New Year's resolutions for 2014 include at least one action item related to Rotary.  I also hope that you achieve all your goals this year.  Best wishes for a happy, healthy and successful New Year.

New Member Class of Fall 2013

Rochester Rotary -
Roberto Clemente School #8

Did you know that our Rotary Club is located in the poorest city in New York State?  Did you also know that Rochester is the 5th poorest city in the entire United States?  Is it any wonder, then, that the graduation rate in the Rochester City School District for all students who start 9th grade is about 45 %, and lower still for male students! Yes, less than half of all students who start the 9th grade graduate from high school, while in Brighton, Penfield, Webster, Fairport, and Pittsford, 80 - 90 % of all students go to college!

If that concerns you, you can help.  Give an hour or two each week tutoring a School 8 student in reading or mathematics.  We have established a number of opportunities for helping children learn.  First is the traditional tutoring that can occur during the school
day.  We will put you in contact with a teacher who has a student in need of some help. You come to  School 8 for an hour any time
that is mutually convenient with your schedule and the teacher's schedule, Mon - Fri between 8:30 and 2:30 and help a student learn.  If your schedule is not uniform and you cannot always make a certain period of time,  an alternative tutoring program may be better. The teachers themselves have an after school tutoring program on Tues. and Thurs. afternoons from 2:30 -4:30.  You are welcome to come for an hour to that program and be assigned a student that you can work with one on one. No specific commitment is needed - just show up.  A third alternative is the YMCA which runs a School 8 after school program Mon - Fri from 2:30 -5:30. Come and join that program and tutor a student or two.  Additionally, if you wish, you can start a chess club for example, or any other group activity that you are skilled in and feel the students might enjoy.  That can also be part of the Y program.

Your help is needed - and greatly appreciated by the students and the faculty at School 8.  For more information, please contact Dick Bayer (586-9228  or  richardbayer01@aol.com)  or Linda O'Neil (loneil@pyramidbrokerage.com)

You will make a difference!

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's "PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!
