President Bob's Journal

Do you know that the Rochester Rotary Club has a mission statement?  It is:

We are a member-centered service organization enriching the lives of our world neighbors, city youth and people with disabilities.

This past Sunday, the Rochester Rotary Club hosted the 88th Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner.  Six hundred Rotarians from across New York State and our world neighbor to the north, Ontario, attended the dinner, as did a number of special guests from Rotary International, including Past RI President Wilf Wilkinson and current RI Director Bryn Styles.  The theme for the dinner this year was a celebration of the women pioneers in Rotary.  Past Club President Linda O'Neil and Past District Governor Terri Hall lead a tribute to our club and district's first female members, club presidents, and district governors.  Our keynote speaker was Anne Matthews, the first woman Vice President of Rotary International.  Her address was simply outstanding, and long time attendees of the dinner have told me that it was the best ever delivered.  The dinner culminated with the Rochester Rotary Club, the 36th Club in the Rotary world, posthumously awarding a Paul Harris Fellow to Susan B. Anthony.

Special thanks and congratulations to Don Alhart, who did a masterful job both as chair of the ECFD Committee and as master of ceremonies, and to all members of the committee.  Each person took responsibility for a particular portion of the event, and every part of the dinner exceeded expectations.  All Rochester Rotarians should be proud of the wonderful and historic dinner our club hosted this year.

At our monthly breakfast meeting, which was held this week, Fran Pullano and Sharon Stiller delivered a presentation on the Affordable Care Act, and how its provisions and implementation will affect business owners.  Please do not hesitate to contact Fran and Sharon, if you were unable to attend the meeting and have any questions or would like to obtain a copy of their materials.  Dick Bayer gave a passionate presentation regarding our club's efforts to enrich the lives of city youth attending our adopted school, the Roberto Clemente School #8.  Dick discussed the various opportunities available to tutor students in math and English.  He also discussed our scholarship program.  Please contact Dick to become involved and make a significant difference in the lives of these city youth.

Please join me and your fellow Rotarians for Happy Hour this evening.  We will be meeting at the Back Nine Grill, located at 3500 East Avenue, beginning at 5:00.  I hope to see you there!

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's "PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!
