Downtown Update:
The Changing Story & Latest News

Join us Tuesday, October 8th at the Locust Hill Country Club where our guest speaker will be Heidi N. Zimmer-Meyer President of the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation.  Ms. Zimmer-Meyer also serves as Executive Director of Downtown Special Services, Inc. (DSSI), the charitable not-for-profit corporation that operates the Downtown Information Center and the "Red Shirts", which uses retired and off-duty law enforcement personnel.

Ms. Zimmer-Meyer is the Chair of the Mayor's Midtown Advisory Committee, and also serves on the City Planning Commission, Rochester Police Chief's Council, Rochester Convention Center Management Corporation Board, Midtown Open Space Committee, and is Vice Chair of the NYS Urban Council.  She also serves on the Rochester Area Community Foundation Board and chairs its Program/Distributions Committee.

President Bob's Journal

Breakfast Meeting:  We had a fantastic turnout for the breakfast meeting on Tuesday.  Thank you to Captain Jeff Bartkoski, who delivered an excellent presentation on leadership and empowering teams.  I know I am not the only one who already has shared the "Get a message to Garcia" lesson with colleagues.  Click here to see the fact sheet that was part of Tracey Dreisbach and Brandi Koch's presentation on the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus.  At the end of the meeting, those present gave me wonderful ideas for topics for future meetings, and I want to encourage all Rotarians to share your ideas, desires and feedback with me.  The next breakfast meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 5, from 7:45 to 8:45, at the Memorial Art Gallery.

Luncheon Meeting:  Mike Alt, Director of the Eastman Business Park, was the keynote speaker at the luncheon meeting.  We learned that the Park, which has been Kodak's primary film manufacturing hub for over a century, now has developed into one of the largest, most diverse industrial and technology parks in the United States.  Mike's presentation was very interesting, and generated many questions from Rotarians.  Mike also offered to lead a tour of the Eastman Business Park for Rochester Rotarians.  If you are interested, please notify Myrna at the Rotary office.

Recognition and Fines: Tay Keller made a donation in honor of his recently deceased wife Carola.  It was great to have Tay back with us at the luncheon meeting.  Stephen Hoitt, the Executive Director of the Boy Scouts of America, Seneca Waterways Council, was recognized for the profile appearing in the current edition of the Rochester Business Journal.  Many Rotarians were impressed by the number of Boy Scout patches on Steve's uniform, which he was wearing in the picture that accompanied the article, but no one could find his Rotary pin!  Scott Rasmussen was the Bright Spot recipient.  Mark Armbruster nominated Scott for stepping up this year to co-chair the Membership Committee, and spearheading the committee's strategic planning initiative.  Scott has been an active participant in Rotary, and is "just an all-around great guy to work with."  Unfortunately, Scott was unable to attend the luncheon meeting, so the club president accepted the tootsie rolls on Scott's behalf.

We need your help. The Community Service Team has two fun and important volunteer opportunities coming up:

Al Sigl Community WalkAbout, October 27

  • More than 1,500 walkers will come together at Eastview Mall to celebrate the abilities of adults and children with special needs.
  • Al Sigl Community of Agencies is asking for Rotarians and family members to help set up and organize the annual costume contest.
  • The volunteer shift is from 9 a.m. to noon.

Salvation Army Christmas Gift Distribution, December 18

  • Low-income families come to Salvation Army's Distribution Center before Christmas for presents and food.
  • Rotarians are needed to help these clients tour the Toy Shop and choose toys for their children, along with a food bag.

Partner with Your Membership Committee for This Year's "PLUS ONE" Campaign!

Rochester Rotarians are the best source of qualified new members--bringing their business colleagues and friends into the club each year. This past year we saw more than 35 new members join Rochester Rotary!

We need your help to achieve our goal for this year. Do you have a business associate or a friend who might benefit from Rochester Rotary through excellent speakers on a variety of topics at the Tuesday Noon Lunch Meeting, business networking meeting with other business leaders or service opportunities such as those at School # 8 and the Sunshine Campus?

Your Membership Committee is undertaking a special campaign for new members-PLUS ONE! We are asking each member to identify and engage one new member! Bring your potential new member to a luncheon or to an upcoming event. Membership Co-Chairs Mary Lewis Consler and Scott Rasmussen are happy to assist you, as are all Membership Committee members.

The proposal process is easy:

  • Simply complete a short Membership Proposal Card, which can be found on the Rochester Rotary website under "Club Committees," and submit the card to the Rotary office.
  • A Membership Committee member will meet with your candidate to discuss Rochester Rotary and to learn more about the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee member will share information with the committee and make a recommendation for Board approval.

Currently Rochester Rotary is looking for new members in these areas:

  • Advertising & Public Relations
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Business Owners
  • Clergy, Religious
  • Commercial Sales
  • Computers, Data Processing
  • Corporate Executives
  • Entertainment & Sports
  • Hotel/Travel
  • Human Resources
  • Military
  • Technology
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

"PLUS ONE"! That's the Membership Committee's and Rochester Rotary's mission this year! With one new member referral you can make a real difference!
