Peace Through Service - Peace Through Understanding -Peace Through Relationship

As we learned on Tuesday, Familiarity Does Not Breed Contempt, it Breeds Understanding!  This was our last meeting under the banner of this year's theme for Rotary International, Peace Through Service.    Dr. Emil Homerin , Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester and an expert and prolific author on Islam, gave a most enlightening presentation entitled "Islam - Principles and Service".   This was an outstanding program and given our misunderstandings and preconceptions of the Islamic teachings, a most important message for us to hear.  Emil did a wonderful job of articulating the essence of the Quran with its constant references to peace, respect and service to all of mankind.  We learned that Islamic Extremists and Terrorists are not following the Quran.  These people are exactly what they are . . . a small faction of Muslims who are extremists and terrorists!  Every religion has these factions, Protestants, Catholics, Jews and even Bhuddists.  Dr. Homerin also shared a wonderful story about Sheikh Abdulah and the circular chicken dinner.  None of us will ever forget that.

Also included in the program was the Imam of the Islamic Center of Rochester, Imam Sheikh Ismet.  Imam Ismet recited an inspirational reading from the Quran that I think was beautiful and spellbinding.  I was reminded of the first principle of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, Seek First to Understand.  I rated the entire program as timely, important, and educational.  I wonder how many Islamic fellow Rotarians there are in the world?  Many many I suspect.  Special thanks to Past President Bob Witmer for putting this program together.

We had two honorees for this week's Tootsie Roll Bright Spot Award.   Hank Ralston was honored for all of his work as chair of our Rotary Foundation Committee.  There is a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work involved in keeping track of RI and PHF contributions and Hank has done it so well for so long.  Our second honoree was Nancy Witmer.  Nancy was nominated by Marie Campbell in honor of their long term and treasured friendship, and given that Bob got all that attention for getting the 2013 Rotary Award, Marie felt that Nancy deserved a little attention herself!  Truly, both Hank and Nancy are shining examples of Service Above Self!  Congratulations to you both!

We hosted another Paul Harris Fellow Reception prior to the last meeting and over 40 PHFs showed up to honor 4 new and 1 new multiple Paul Harris Fellows.  The four new PHFs are Mark Armbruster, Paul Calloway, Bob Lewis, and Wolfgang Pfizenmaier.  Our newest Multiple PHF is Scott Anthony.    Congratulations to each of you for your Service Above Self and your commitment to Rotary International!

We had Thinking of You cards on the luncheon tables this week for Bob Williams.  As many of you already know, Bob was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.   What you may not know is that he fell while volunteering at School #8 last Friday and underwent surgery to repair a spinal fracture on Saturday.  With a plate in his back and a steel rod bracing his spine, he is now at the Episcopal Home for rehabilitation.  Beth says his spirits are excellent, the prognosis is good, and visitors will be welcome.  Herb Schwartz and Carl Gerard from the Friendship Committee went to see him the other day and were really impressed with how fast Bob is healing.

A REMINDER - Do you recall how much fun it was to start my year as President with the "BOW TIE BRIGADE"?   I would like to end my year with the Brigade back in force and am asking that everyone make an attempt to wear a bowtie to my last meeting.  Men, Women, Young and Old - everyone who can scrape up a bowtie is encouraged to join the honorable BOW TIE BRIGADE.

Judge Johnny's Fines and Recognition Report:

This was truly a great week to play both Judge and Jury over our most generous membership.

  • Charitable Trust Board Member David Ferris volunteered a $25 contribution in honor of Tony Sciolino upon his receipt of a literary Silver Medal for his recent book.  He then challenged Tony to explain why, in the world of Service Above Self, Tony sent out an email highlighting his award to about 1,000 of his closest friends.  Filled with contrition, Tony offered up a mea culpa contribution of $50.  The court was well pleased!
  • It came to the court's attention that the Ronald McDonald House Charities recently held a Red Tie Gala.  Pictures  from the Gala of Past President Joe Floreano, Past Executive Director Bob Enright, and member Carol Anne DeMoulin, President of the RMH Charities, revealed that none of the three had on their Rotary pins.  However, rather than the levy of a fine, and in an unprecedented act of generosity, Judge Johnny ruled that he would send the RMH Charities a $75 contribution to honor the wonderful work these Rotarians do for the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Dolly Malik, in a moment of personal joy, volunteered a $50 contribution in honor of Judge Tony Sciolino.  It seems that at last week's meeting on June 4th, exactly 20 years from the date of the decree, Dolly's daughter had the chance to meet Judge Sciolino who had fought so hard to overcome legal obstacles and thus allowed her adoption.  Heartwarming to say the least!
  • And, under the rules of Administrative Technicalities, Past President Bob Witmer was fined $50 for failing to properly register his Tootsie Roll Bright Spot Winner wife Nancy as his guest.  The embarrassment of Sgt of Arms Greg Kausch was relieved by the assessment of the fine.
  • And this was another Bizarre Incident.  Past President Floreano levied a fine of $50 on Past President Bob Maney for wearing the same necktie two weeks in a row!  Although there was no order in the court at this point, I believe I heard Mr. Maney state that "Payback is hell" and fined Joe $50 for reason of which I am unclear.

Subject: Rotary Flash Mob To End Polio Now!

Hello District Rotarians,

Hello friends!

We had a fantastic District Conference with a great Flash Mob and now I'm asking for your help in promoting it so that we can reach the 1 million (plus) hits that we are looking for.

Here is the official version, which features PRIP Ray Klinginsmith.

We are using this video to promote Rotary and our PolioPlus program and asking people to watch the video, email the link to their friends, like and share it on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media sites.

A long 2 1/2 years from dream to dance and only 2 1/2 minutes for the dance itself!
