President John's Journal

I was hoping that Tuesday's meeting on gun control and the NYS SAFE Act would be well received and so it was! We had an excellent turnout for an outstanding presentation by Chief Sheppard and Sheriff O'Flynn. I was so proud, as I think we all were, to have these two nationally known and locally treasured law enforcement professionals at our podium. Chief Sheppard joined the RPD in 1981 and Sheriff O'Flynn joined the Sheriff's Office in 1976. They have both spent their entire careers honorably and brilliantly serving the people of Rochester and Monroe County. What a blessing they are to our community!

Although they expressed different perspectives on the recent SAFE Act, they both share the same vision for less gun violence and more peace of mind for every citizen. The news reports might lead you to believe that they didn't agree, but their goals are exactly the same. It was a very poignant moment when Chief Sheppard said, "I'm tired of seeing brown people like me lying in the street".

Special thanks to Rochester Rotarians Jennifer Sommers and Mike Woods for helping to put this most important program together. Another GREAT day at Rochester Rotary!

=============

Our 2nd Annual Euchre Tournament was held last Sunday and from what I hear it was a wonderful afternoon of competitive fellowship. Many thanks to Greg Kausch and Jim & Shirley Isaac for helping to plan and coordinate the event. It was a fun time for all 38 participants and a donation of $200 was made to the Jim Morgan Fund.

=============

A new member Boot Camp was held on Tuesday afternoon with 5 new members in attendance. Jeremy Bagley from Nazareth College, Eric Birdsall from Centra Financial, Rich Gianforti from Flower City Glass, Timothy List from the Rochester Police Department, and Lori Parker, Attorney got all the scoop and lowdown on the history, structure, and service opportunities at Rochester Rotary.   Donna Dedee and Tracey Dreisbach deliver this Boot Camp with professionalism, wisdom, and panache. The importance of what they do in this session cannot be overstated. I always find it thrilling to see the quality and commitment of new Rotarians who are ready, willing and anxious to dive right in and begin serving.

Judge Johnny's Fines and Recognition Report:

  • Dolly Malik volunteered a $25 fine for not registering a guest properly and causing embarrassment and shame to our distinguished Sgt-at-Arms, Greg Kausch. All in good fun, and all to benefit RI.
  • Sgt-at-Arms Greg Kausch offered an "awe shucks, it's OK Dolly" fine to show forgiveness and support for Dolly. It only took $25 to change Greg from a tough guy to a sensitive new age guy. Warmed the cockles of my little heart!
  • Bill Weber offered a $50 fine to honor his son who is a Chef studying and being highlighted by celebrity chef Guy Fiery on the Food Network. Did I hear Joe Floreano ask for his resume?
  • Chip Lacure offered a $25 fine to honor his daughter for passing her driver's license test on the second try. Chip said the fine was less money than the prescription for tranquilizers he has been taking worrying about her driving skills.

=============

Finally, I need to rally the members of the Tootsie Roll Bright Spot Club to send me some nominations for someone to receive the Bright Spot Award. If you want to nominate someone and you are not a member, a small pledge of $100 payable by June 30th is all you need to do.

76th Rotary Award Recipient
Bob Witmer

At its February Meeting the Rochester Rotary Club Board accepted the Rotary Award Committee's recommendation for the 76th Rochester Rotary Award recipient - Bob Witmer.  Bob was nominated by Carl Gerard and Joel Seligman.

Bob has been a member of Rochester Rotary since 1971. He is  past Club President and past Charitable Trust Board of Directors President.

"Bob has been, and remains, a leader amongst leaders demonstrating exceptional qualities of "Service Above Self". Few, if any, can measure to his high ethical standards and very deep involvement in the community. "
- Carl Gerard

"Bob is the rare leader who not only exercises authority and influence vigorously and responsibly, but personally embodies the intelligence, values, and traditions of any institutions he is tapped to lead. Combine with those qualities Bob's calm presence, faithful allegiance and loyalty, and his enthusiastic participation in the board panoply of institutional actives for which he is responsible, and one finds in him a rare and special community treasure who is deserving of widespread respect and affection."
- University of Rochester President, Joel Seligman
