NYS Gun Control
A disucssion of the S.A.F.E Act

Join us Tuesday, March 12, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where our guest speakers will be Sheriff Partick O'Flynn and Chief James Sheppard.

They will be discussing the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act(  S.A.F.E) and its impact on crime in our city & county.  They will also discuss the issues regarding sportsman and the 2nd Admendement.  The good, bad, the enforceable and the un-enforceable.

President John's Journal

Sandy and I are back from sunny Florida, and although vacations are fun, it's nice to be back home again. It may be cold and gray, but it is home. I understand that President Elect Bob did a wonderful job leading the meeting last week and that Larry Fine made an outstanding presentation. I am so impressed with our club! We have terrific depth of leadership and programs that are timely and important. Special thanks to Club Vice President Ellen Wagner for asking Larry to speak to us on the complexities and challenges of Israel and the Middle East.

Tuesday's program on the Finger Lakes Museum project was very enlightening. Who knew that this was potentially a $40 million dollar project that will attract tens of thousands of visitors to our region. The Museum will provide research, education, exhibits and experiences highlighting the treasure we have right here within our reach. John Adamski, President of the Museum Board, and Don Naetzker, Executive Director gave an impressive presentation on their vision and development plans for the museum with a beautiful video and slides detailing all that we can expect. Rochester is the gateway to the Finger Lakes and I have no doubt this museum will be yet another jewel in the cultural and economic development of our region.

=============

Sadly, we learned on Monday of the passing of Robert Hurlbut Sr. Bob joined Rochester Rotary in 1981 and was the 2011 Rotary Award recipient. Robert's humanitarian spirit and his generous commitment to our community will be deeply missed.

=============

Every once in a while I think it's a good thing to remind ourselves of the reasons why we do the things that we do. For example, why are we active Rochester Rotarians? Is Rotary meeting the expectations we had when we joined? Are we excited about inviting others we know to join us for mutual benefit? Have I taken the time to "keep score"?

ACTION REQUESTED: Check off the items on the list below that are meaningful to your membership in Rotary. Let me know if I missed anything. And, let me know if we are not meeting your expectations and what we need to do better.

Judge Johnny's Fines and Recognition Report:

  • Gary Albanese volunteered a $25 fine on behalf of his wife Cheryl who was pictured in the Rochester Business Journal for winning some elegant hat contest (I think). At any rate, it was a lovely picture and I had the chance to meet her at the Sunshine Kids Gala and confirm that Gary should pay a fine.
  • I, John White, offered a recognition fine in honor of my daughter Laura, who initiated a Wellness Challenge program in the hospital where she is an intern in South Dakota. Overriding many naysayers, she forged ahead with the program and now has 364 employees signed up! My mirror tells me I should sign up as well!

76th Rotary Award Recipient
Bob Witmer

At its February Meeting the Rochester Rotary Club Board accepted the Rotary Award Committee's recommendation for the 76th Rochester Rotary Award recipient - Bob Witmer.  Bob was nominated by Carl Gerard and Joel Seligman.

Bob has been a member of Rochester Rotary since 1971. He is  past Club President and past Charitable Trust Board of Directors President.

"Bob has been, and remains, a leader amongst leaders demonstrating exceptional qualities of "Service Above Self". Few, if any, can measure to his high ethical standards and very deep involvement in the community. "
- Carl Gerard

"Bob is the rare leader who not only exercises authority and influence vigorously and responsibly, but personally embodies the intelligence, values, and traditions of any institutions he is tapped to lead. Combine with those qualities Bob's calm presence, faithful allegiance and loyalty, and his enthusiastic participation in the board panoply of institutional actives for which he is responsible, and one finds in him a rare and special community treasure who is deserving of widespread respect and affection."
- University of Rochester President, Joel Seligman
