2012: Armageddon or Renaissance?

Join us this Tuesday, October 23rd at the Convention Center where  our guest speaker will be John Zogby, founder of the "Zogby Poll"

John Zogby Founder of the Zogby Poll, the "second best known polling brand in the US today" (Washington Post) John Zogby remains the hottest and most accurate pollster and analyst of America's political and cultural landscape.

Called "The Prince of Polling" by political strategist Mary Matalin, John is excited to be engaged in his fifth presidential election as a national pollster and veteran analyst. In addition to his active left brain activities crunching numbers that have been consistently among the most accurate opinion research data available, Zogby

is also a well- known interpreter of the American and global scene.

As author of The New York Times bestseller" The Way We'll Be: The Zogby Report on the Transformation of the American Dream", Zogby continues to put his finger on the pulse of America, creating a portrait of the trends that drive our society today, and in the future. He has

delivered over 100 speeches, public lectures and salon sessions each year since 1999, and with every audience his goal is to both educate and entertain. A teacher at heart with 24 years of experience as a professor of American history and politics, his public persona is always conversational, humorous, poignant and useful. Few speakers bring the combination of accurate data, trend spotting, storytelling and global perspective that John Zogby delivers.

If you plan to bring a guest to this Tuesday luncheon, please contact the Rotary Office, 546-7435.
President John's  Journal
Fellowship and friendship are two cornerstones of Rotary, and this past week has been a great time for me to experience both. Last Thursday the 11th we had the fellowship event of Fly Fishing hosted by Jeff Leenhouts. We had about 20 Rotarians gather by the pond at the Leenhouts' family retreat to do my favorite thing in the whole world, casting a fly upon the water. After a short lesson on proper fly casting, we tied on the little bug imitations and went fishing to try out our new skills. Kudos to Mark Armbruster for catching the most fish, 4 of them, to Nancy Rencis for catching the largest fish, a sunfish that must have spent its entire life eating Big Macs, and to Dan Davies for being the most elegant fly caster.

Another great event for me was speaking to the Women of Rotary meeting on Monday the 15th. Their warmth of reception and the deep friendship they share so generously was wonderful. President Anna Pink and program chair Carol Bonenfant conducted an excellent meeting and Debbie Anthony read the minutes from the last meeting in such a way that you actually felt like you were there! Dedication, Commitment, Fellowship, Purpose, and Fun . . . all words that describe my impression of this outstanding group of women. Thanks for inviting me!

=============

Tuesday's program at Locust Hill featured Richard Glaser, the founder of Rochester Growth and a financial professional that specializes in advising and mentoring entrepreneurial ventures. His focus was not on small business, but rather on new business ventures that want to become big business ventures. With his finger on the pulse of successful enterprise in Rochester, he challenged us to embrace the changes of how young CEOs network, learn, socialize and establish inviting cultures in their organizations.  I think a lot us left the meeting with one foot on our familiar shore, and one foot gingerly on the boat sailing into new waters.

=============

Fines and recognitions were in full bloom this week! We had two Tootsie Roll Bight Spot winners. Julie St. Germaine of Signs Now was honored for her continuous and generous support of every event that Rochester Rotary conducts and for winning the 2012 Business Ethics Award just a few weeks ago. And, Joe Floreano of the Rochester Riverside Convention Center was honored as our first ever Multiple Tootsie Roller by Sally Jo Stookey who donated a generous sum to the Tootsie Roll Club in his honor.

Wolfgang Pfizenmaier "fined" himself having just returned from Germany where he celebrated his son's graduation from university with an Engineering degree. And in the category of "No good deed goes unpunished", Jeff Leenhouts was fined for going over the top in hosting the very successful Fly Fishing event. Thank you gentlemen!

B2B After Hours Event - School of the Holy Childhood
Holy Childhood

Our next Business to Business After Hours event will be held Thursday Oct. 25th from 4:30-6:30pm at the School of the Holy Childhood!

We will have the opportunity to tour the school as Holy Childhood's Adult Day Training Program provides vocational training, sheltered employment opportunities, transitional day habilitation and recreational programming for over 95 adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. With three sheltered employment workshops housed in this program, the most widely known is the Special Touch Bakery which produces 17,000 pies annually. Other areas of note are the Woodworking shop in which our adults produce beautiful items such as cutting boards and Adirondack chairs and the PWI workshop which contracts with local businesses to process high volume projects such as bulk mailings, sorting and fulfillment.

Lastly....get ready for a bake off! We will - with the help of Holy Childhood Bakers - have the opportunity to have a pie contest.

RSVP today to Brandi@rochesterrotary.org or 546-7435 x210.

Ever wonder what it would be like to teach simple lessons to a classroom full of young children?

We have an opportunity for you, and you don't need to have aJA in a Day  teaching background in order to take advantage of it. It's called JA in a Day, a Junior-Achievement-sponsored day when Rotarians act as substitute teachers for a day, inspiring youngsters to take what they're learning in school and applying it to the real world.  Junior Achievement gives you a kit full of all the lesson plans and activities you'll need to have a successful and fun day with your students.

Please set aside Thursday, November 15th to volunteer for Rochester Rotary's JA in a Day at School #8.  You can choose to volunteer just in the morning from 8-11 am with kindergarten and first graders, or from 8 am - 1:30 pm with second through sixth graders.  You will be paired up in the classroom with another volunteer, and the children's teacher will be in the classroom with you as well.

We have 13 volunteers already signed up; we need 12 more to make this day a success. Please contact Tracey Dreisbach at tracey@rochesterrotary.org or Bill Keenan at bkeenan@rsdeaf.org if you'd like to give it a go.

We will have training dates to prepare you for what will happen during the day on the 15th and become familiar with the materials.

The training dates will be held in the Rotary office on:

  •           Friday, October 12th: 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  •          Wednesday, October 17th: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  •          Monday, October 22nd: 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

This will be a day to remember.    Don't wait - Sign up today!
