5 Alabama startups to compete for $100,000 today at LEAP competition
on May 03, 2016 

Alabama Launchpad startups will have another chance to compete for funding today during the inaugural LEAP Alumni Competition in Birmingham.

The event, hosted by the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, will begin at 4 p.m. with networking at WorkPlay Theatre on 500 23rd Street, followed by the competition at 6.

The teams from Birmingham, Huntsville and Florence are previous Alabama Launchpad competitors and will rival for their chance at $100,000.

UTC Aerospace Systems to add 260 jobs with Alabama expansion

FOLEY, Alabama - UTC Aerospace Systems announced plans today to expand its Baldwin County aerostructures plant with a new $30 million facility that will supply integrated jet engines to the Airbus A320 Family assembly line in Mobile, creating 260 jobs.

At a groundbreaking ceremony today at its Foley site, UTC revealed plans to construct a 80,000-square-foot building to house assembly of nacelle components - the aerodynamic coverings around engines - and propulsion system integration.

The primary mission of the new facility, UTC says, is to support the production of A320 Family aircraft in Alabama by Airbus. Initially, the focus will be on the conventional engines for the Airbus passenger jets, though it eventually will include the new engine option, or neo.
