What led Google to choose Alabama for new data center?
No single reason attracted Google to north Alabama, where the company announced Wednesday it would build a $600 million data center in Jackson County.
Two state incentive packages, however, grabbed the high-tech company's attention.
"Alabama offers data center-specific incentives so that they benefit the data center industry, which was an important part of our decision to locate here," said Gary Demasi, director of global infrastructure at Google.

Birmingham biotech startup lands $750K grant for cancer research

Birmingham-based biotech startup Blondin Bioscience has been awarded a two-year, $750,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a test that gauges the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment for patients with prostate cancer.
Blondin Bioscience is working to develop its propriety assay, dubbed Fluorescent Analysis of Cell-free Telomeres, or FACT, which analyzes the cell-free DNA fragments in patient serum or other bodily fluids.

Auburn University recognized for its $5.1 billion impact on the state economy last year

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities named Auburn an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, a designation that recognizes the university's strong commitment to economic engagement and its work with public and private sector partners in Alabama and the region.

Regions Field named "Best of the Ballparks"

Regions Field has become a major draw for downtown Birmingham, and the praise just keeps coming in for the new park.
Ballpark Digest - a publication devoted to America's baseball parks - recently unveiled the winners for its "Best of the Ballparks" competition, and the home of the Birmingham Barons took the top spot for Double-A.
