Bentley administration introducing new plan for Alabama to fund industry incentives

Gov. Robert Bentley's administration is introducing a new plan to fund the incentives that help recruit employers to the state, changing from a plan the governor said has been based on borrowing money by selling bonds.

 

Bentley talked briefly about the plan while speaking to the winter conference of the Economic Development Association of Alabama this morning in Montgomery.

Gov. Robert Bentley will speak Wednesday morning at the winter conference of the Economic Development Association of Alabama.

 

The governor will talk about job creation and economic development priorities, according to a news release from his office.

UAB one of 25 U.S. schools added in 2015 to innovation program for engineering students

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is one of 25 colleges in the United States -- and one of only six in the South -- selected this year to join a federally funded program to help schools better train their undergraduate engineering students to become innovators and entrepreneurs. 

 

UAB was picked by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation, or Epicenter, to join the Pathways to Innovation Program, according to a UAB news release on Friday.

UAH receives major cyber defense certification

University of Alabama Huntsville leaders are hoping a newly acquired accolade will help them attract more cyber security opportunities. The school is one of only 77 universities nationwide to receive a top cyber defense certification. 

 

The new distinction is lengthy in name - it's called a National Security Agency-Department of Homeland Security Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense.

But university administration officials say that means UAH is now among the nation's elite in cyber security and defense.

Mark Fillers named CEO for BBVA Compass' south Alabama operations

BBVA Compass announced Tuesday that Mark Fillers will be the new chief executive, overseeing its operations in south Alabama, the company said in a press release. 

Fillers, who most recently served as the area's market president, joined BBVA Compass in 2007 as a commercial banking manager. Fillers earned a master's degree from Auburn University and bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama.

 

The move comes as the company recently underwent a reorganization, combining its retail, wealth management and commercial banking businesses into one unit.
