Hyundai supplier finishes latest expansion

Brad Harper, Montgomery Advertiser

December 11, 2014

An auto supplier in Shorter has finished work on its latest expansion, adding a 70,000-square-foot warehouse.

It was the third expansion for Halla Visteon Climate Control Alabama Corp., which makes front-end assemblies for Hyundai and Kia. The plant already employs more than 500 and plans to add more workers as a result of the expansion.

The latest structure allows the company to access their material supplies in a building next door to their main, 290,000-square-foot facility.

Cooperation makes industrial park road, KwangSung growth possible

By Cliff Williams

December 10, 2014

The William Thweatt Industrial Park is growing.

The Lake Martin Area Economic Development Alliance hosted a ribbon-cutting celebration and plant tour Tuesday to highlight the latest enhancements at the park, as well as the cooperation of several groups to make it all happen.

Dignitaries cut the ribbon on the road expansion in the park Tuesday morning after months of work made possible by a $800,000 industrial access road grant from the State of Alabama along with a $350,000 sewer upgrade grant making possible another investment by KwangSung.

Tallapoosa County Commission Chairman T.C. Coley called the developments a great thing for the area

State to expand its pre-K program thanks to $17.5M grant

By Mary Sell Montgomery Bureau |

December 10, 2014

MONTGOMERY - Alabama will receive $17.5 million from a federal grant to expand its voluntary pre-kindergarten program, but officials say it still needs more money to reach more children.

The program to prepare 4-year-olds for school has been recognized nationally, but reaches only about 12 percent of potential students.

Alabama School Readiness Alliance, a statewide nonprofit organization, is asking lawmakers and Gov. Robert Bentley to increase funding in 2016 by $13.2 million, in addition to Wednesday's grant announcement. This year, $38.5 million from the education budget is being directed toward pre-K in about 410 schools.

Sen. Jeff Sessions helps United Launch Alliance in Decatur dodge threat to 800 jobs in defense bill
on December 11, 2014

WASHINGTON - United Launch Alliance's 800 aerospace workers in Decatur, Ala., will apparently dodge an economic missile aimed at the company in a Pentagon spending bill banning the Russian rocket engine ULA uses to lift U.S. national security satellites.

The compromise $577 billion spending bill expected to win final passage in the Senate this weekend still bans Russian RD-180 rocket engines from Defense Department launches. But because of negotiations including U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Mobile), the final bill doesn't ban the engines immediately and will allow ULA to use the RD-180s it has in stock or under contract.

ULA uses the RD-180 to boost the Atlas V rockets its Alabama workforce assembles in a massive plant on the Tennessee River in Decatur. The Atlas V and ULA's Delta rockets, also built in Decatur, launch the overwhelming majority of America's national security satellites.

PPG Aerospace to supply windows, assemblies for Gulfstream G500, G600 jets
Manufacturing Group | December 10, 2014

Huntsville, Alabama - PPG Industries' aerospace transparencies group has been selected by Gulfstreamto supply windshields, side cockpit windows and passenger-cabin window assemblies for the G500 and G600 business jets. The passenger-cabin windows will use Opticor advanced transparency material to maintain optical clarity and provide a quieter cabin. The equipment has been proven through its use on the Gulfstream G650 program.

According to Mark Hood, PPG Aerospace global platform manager for general aviation transparencies, the windshields and windows will offer clean aerodynamics, reliability, acoustic and safety benefits, and fuel economies.

"PPG's transparencies have a demonstrated history of performance," Hood said. "Aircrews will appreciate the enhanced visibility through the wide windshields and broad side cockpit windows. Passengers will enjoy better viewing through the passenger-cabin windows that are aviation's largest in a bright, quieter cabin."
