The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama awarded $250,387 to five of the six Alabama startup companies that spent Thursday morning pitching their ideas "Shark Tank"-style as part of the Alabama Launchpad competition.

Companies with ideas ranging from cancer screening to car wheel alignment, and from personalized gift boxes for hospital patients to software to help nonprofits raise more money made 10-minute pitches to a five-judge panel at Birmingham's WorkPlay.

In the end, the panel awarded most of the $300,000 available through the EDPA Alabama Launchpad program. The funds will be used toward "proof of concept" to help five startup teams grow their businesses in Alabama.

In June, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance rolled out its first C-Class sedans - a new generation of the automaker's best selling vehicle.

This month, BFGoodrich, the oldest member of Tuscaloosa County's automotive-related manufacturers, rolled out its newest generation - the All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire.

Like the vehicles it will be on, the KO2 tires are being touted for their improvements in performance and durability. And for the workers at BFGoodrich, a new generation of tires provides a sense of job security.

ACP "feels at home" with new Enterprise site
Sept. 25, 2014

Kay Ivey said when she signed on to become lieutenant governor of Alabama "little did I know I'd spend most of my time in Enterprise."

Ivey was back in Enterprise Thursday for the grand opening of Advanced Carrier Products, which moved its offices from Atlanta earlier this year.

ACP is a tier 2 company in the automotive industry, making a complete line of lanced and stamped core metal inserts for use in extruded weather seals. Huehoco - ACP's parent company - Chairman Christoph Koslowski said that without the application ACP provides, "not a single car in the United States could be delivered."

The product will say Made in the United States, something Tober said was ironic since it is shipped to places such as China.

Intermodal hub positions Alabama in Norfolk Southern's future
Michael Tomberlin, Alabama Power
September 26, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - You can almost gauge the state of the economy by watching the train and truck traffic at Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Birmingham Regional Intermodal Facility (BRIMF).

Shipping containers packed with everything from retail goods bound for stores to auto parts bound for factories move in and out of the $97.5 million, 316-acre facility in McCalla.

An increasing number of vehicles from various automakers are moving through the facility bound for Alabama dealerships. In fact, the volume of vehicles being shipped through the facility prompted a decision to expand the center's automotive holding area, an official giving a tour of the facility said.

Located across the tracks from the Jefferson Metropolitan Park McCalla - the Jefferson County-owned and operated industrial park - the BRIMF brings in anywhere from five to 15 trains a day. While most are the familiar container trains, a growing number are enclosed train cars carrying cars and trucks from automakers and distributors across the country or in Alabama.

Professionals in a variety of fields including aerospace, construction, communications and shipbuilding took time to speak with the students and offer a hands-on experience.

Jeffrey Mackie, an instructor at Faulkner Career Tech Center, showed students how to place bricks on mortar and lay them in a straight line.

Mackie also talked to the students about those who build things leave a legacy for future generations.

"I get to see my work all around this city," Mackie said, including the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center and Providence Hospital as some of the buildings on which he worked. "They'll be around when I'm gone."
