Alabama parks drive $375M into state economy

They may be full of hiking, camping and fun on the water, but Alabama's 22 state parks are serious business when it comes to their impact on the economy.

 

The parks system had a total impact of $375 million and supported 5,340 jobs in 2011, according to a new study by the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. That includes $152.4 million spent by visitors along with spending by the parks system itself.

 

The study was commissioned by the State Parks Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Torch Technologies in Huntsville wins nearly $71 million contract for missile element simulations

on March 24, 2014

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Huntsville-based Torch Technologies announced today it has been awarded a nearly $71 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for missile element simulations.

 

The Development, Operations, Maintenance and Support (DOMS) Missile Element Simulation (MES) contract, which will be completed in February 2019, will support the Systems Simulation and Development Directorate (SSDD), Aviation and Missile, Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC).

 

A release announcing the $70,997,405 award said the contract will "enhance and maintain the current suite of missile modeling simulation, hardware-in-the-loop and prototype development facilities."

 By the numbers: AT&T invests more than $1.35 billion in Alabama networks from 2011-13

on March 24, 2014 

AT&T invested more than $1.35 billion in wireless and wired networks across Alabama from 2011 to 2013, the company announced in a news release late last week.

 

Here's a quick by-the-numbers look at AT&T's 2011-13 investment plan:

 

957 - Number of AT&T network upgrades in Alabama in 2013, including new cell sites, addition of wireless and wired network capacity and new broadband network connections.

 

36,000 - Number of new customer locations with access to AT&T U-verse Internet and video services.

1,664 - Number of business locations receiving AT&T fiber-optic connections.

Momentum Telecom opens new Birmingham headquarters on Trinity Medical Center campus

on March 24, 2014 


BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -Momentum Telecom Inc.officially opened its new corporate headquarters in Birmingham today after moving from Hoover to a professional office building on the Trinity Medical Center campus on Montclair Road.

 

Birmingham Mayor William Bell and Birmingham City Councilwoman Valerie Abbott participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with leaders of the telecommunications company on the fourth floor of the880 Building on the hospital campus. Abbott's district includes the Trinity campus.Colliers International Alabama is leasing the building. 

 

Momentum's new headquarters brings 65 information technology jobs into Birmingham with room to add 20 more, Bill Fox, chief executive of Momentum, said.
