Gov. Bentley's economic recovery trip to Elmore Co. comes with irony

By Max Reiss

Sept. 10, 2013

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -Alabama Governor Robert Bentley spent Tuesday talking about the economy with business leaders in Elmore County, but one of the biggest construction projects in the region is going up without political fanfare.

Walking around the Central Alabama Electric Cooperative, Governor Bentley said he could see the wheels turning on an economy slowing getting out of a recession.

"They tell you that business is better, especially over the past six or eight months it's better," he said. "These are anecdotal stories that I hear not only here in Elmore County but all over the state."

In downtown Wetumpka, the governor visited a printing company that's just steps from view of one of the biggest and most controversial construction projects around, a place the governor didn't visit on his "Road to Economic Recovery Tour."

Certified Sites Lower Risks and Increase Speed to Market for OEMs

CSX's site certification program complements Alabama's own AdvantageSite designation; both of these programs ensure that proper due diligence has been performed on a site and it is ready for development.
Area Development Online Research Desk (2013 Auto/Aero Site Guide)

It's a well-known fact that supply chain and logistics issues affect the location decisions of all manufacturers - and particularly those in the automotive sector. Major assembly operations and their OEM suppliers locate in proximity to one another, and the finished products need good road and rail transportation access to deliver their products to consumer markets.

Part of that equation has been satisfied through CSX's Select Site Program, which identifies for manufacturers those properties along the CSX network that can rapidly utilize freight rail service.

This designation confirms that standard land use issues have been addressed on the sites and they are ready for development.

2014 World Leisure Congress set to 'transform' Mobile economy, boost quality of life

on September 10, 2013

MOBILE, Alabama - How about a few numbers to ponder when considering Mobile's future and the role the Port City could play in transforming yet another tenet of Alabama's economy.

  • 367: The number of days until the 2014 World Leisure Congress lands in Mobile.
  • 4,000: The number of fresh eyes the six-day event will attract to downtown streets and far-flung attractions just begging for a little international attention.
  • 40: The number of countries from which World Leisure Congress guests hail
  • 30+ million: The number of tax dollars organizers at the local level are hopeful a successful leisure strategy could pump into city and county coffers.
  • 0: The number of other U.S. cities ever asked to host this event.

Chinese influence already embraced in Troy

By Lance Griffin

September 10, 2013

Troy University graduate student Qi Han can rattle off the fundamentals that need to be present for a thriving free market economy, and the building blocks any business needs to take advantage of the market.

His Masters of Business Administration taught him that. Soon, his Masters of Public Administration will help him be proficient in managing from a government angle. Han, a native of Jiangsu, China, said his classroom education at Troy has been invaluable.

However, Han said his greatest education has come from outside the classroom.

"I personally experienced a big ideology shift," he said. "It wasn't just the education. My experiences here extended my perspective."

BBVA Compass focusing on online banking, cyber security, CEO says

on September 10, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - BBVA Compass, anticipating a coming generation of cyber-savvy customers, is investing heavily in online banking and internet security, the bank's CEO said this morning.

The Birmingham-based bank was the first bank in the U.S. to offer online banking in real-time, CEO Manolo Sanchez said at a meeting of Birmingham's Hispanic Business Council. Most banks settle accounts at the end of the day rather than execute transactions in real time, he said.

"Try telling a 14-year-old that the world is not in real time," he said. "She would have a fit."

Sept. 10, 2013

The annual college rankings from U.S. News and World Report included many schools from Alabama, but a university from Birmingham took the highest spot among Alabama schools ranked in the report.

Samford University is ranked at No. 3 among Regional Universities in the South.

"This is a great milestone for Samford University, and many people have worked to make this possible," said Samford President Andrew Westmoreland in a press release. "We continually assess our standing compared with our peers, but we always believe that the best measure of our success is in the academic and career accomplishments of our students, faculty and alumni."

Samford climbed in the rankings from No. 4 last year to the No. 3 spot in the latest rankings.
