HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Huntsville will host the nation's first public hearing on a new $1 billion national manufacturing initiative devoted to connecting new technologies, manufacturers and start-up companies.

The proposal is to create 15 centers across the country where states, cities, companies and colleges can collaborate to apply new technologies in ways that improve U.S. manufacturing and innovation. The initiative, known as the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, was proposed by President Barack Obama and organized by theAdvanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO) at the National Institute of Science and Technology.

The Jan. 16 meeting, hosted by the U.S. Department of Defense and supported by the University of Alabama at Huntsville, NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center, will bring the Obama administration's top manufacturing officials to Huntsville to talk with manufacturing leaders from the region and across the country.

William Killingsworth, director of the Office for Enterprise Innovation at UAH's Research Institute, said the hope is to bring one of the 15 centers to Huntsville next year.

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012
By Stan Diel | sdiel@al.com

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Alabama Power Co. has begun receiving wind-generated power from the Chisholm View Wind Project in Oklahoma, the utility announced.

The power, part of a 2011 deal, "positions Alabama Power to be a leading purchaser of wind-generated energy in the Southeast by 2014," the utility said in a prepared statement. Alabama Power entered a similar agreement in September with the Buffalo Dunes Wind Project.

"These agreements allow us to bring wind energy to our customers without burdening them with investment costs," said John Kelley, Alabama Power resource planning director.

Planned road could be path to more jobs at McClellan
Dec 16, 2012

Officials with the McClellan Development Authority hope a planned new road will entice manufacturers to consider a move to the old fort.

Crews recently clear-cut the right-of-way for nearly two miles of planned road to connect an industrial park at McClellan with Alabama 21 north of Lenlock.

The path was cleared in hopes that the city of Anniston will receive $4 million from a statewide roads program. Kevin Ashley, a city engineer for Anniston, said city leaders will know Jan. 24 if they will receive the grant.

MDA Executive Director Robin Scott said his agency has hired a company that has completed 30 percent of the diagrams needed to start construction of the project. The company remains on standby, ready to finish the documents once the funding is secured.
