Dear Savas Beatie Readers,

Hello, and welcome to April. We have some great opportunities and features for you this month. No Foolin'. (Well, at least not in the newsletter, but maybe in the office today . . .).

The Petersburg Campaign, Volume II: The Western Front Battles is now in stock. Copies arrived last week and they look marvelous. If you haven't placed your order for a copy with a bookplate signed by Ed Bearss and Bryce Suderow yet, do so soon. The bookplates are going fast. Also be sure to check out the book trailer for The Petersburg Campaign, Volume II below, and enter the CONTEST to boot.

We have an opportunity to help a family in need. Please scroll down for information on the Phipps Family, who some of you know from history circles. Use coupon code PHIPPS to purchase any in stock title from Savas Beatie and we will donate 15% of the proceeds to help the family.  You can also donate here.

We also have not one, but two Spotlight Features this month. Join us for a tour of Eric Wittenberg's library and also tour Pages of the Past, a very special store in Gettysburg.

Continue reading to find out what time  The Maps of Gettysburg author Bradley Gottfried gets up in the morning (yes, the answer is actually related to history); to view some great photos of recent book signing events; and to see where to visit our authors in April.

Until next month, Happy Reading!

Spotlight on Eric Wittenberg's Library

This month we take you inside Eric Wittenberg's book collection. We are looking forward to publishing Eric's next book in the Fall, titled

"The Devil's to Pay": John Buford at Gettysburg. A History and Walking Tour.

Q: Roughly how many books do you have in your collection?

A: Civil War books, 2,000 or so. Total books, 3,000 or so.

Q: How many times have you had to move with the library?

A: Not since it got this big. We've been in our house for 19 years.

Q: What does your wife think of the library?

A: She loves books as much as I do. She has about 1,500 of her own.

Q: What's your most prized book?

A: Of my Civil War books: A signed first edition copy of James H. Kidd's memoirs. I've published two volumes of Kidd's writings, and he's a great favorite of mine. Of my Non-Civil War books: Autographed first edition copies of Dwight D. Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe, Omar N. Bradley's A Soldier's Story, Harry S. Truman's Memoirs, a book about
Douglas MacArthur written by his chief of staff, Gen. Courtney Whitney that was signed by MacArthur, and a signed first edition copy of John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage. Very late in his life, Richard Nixon also signed a book for me. I have a total of six presidential autographs.

This is the corner where the left and right wall meet. I guess you could call it ground zero of the library. Every book you see here is a Civil War book. This does not include the rest of my library.

********************************************************************************************************

Q: How are the titles organized?

A: The Civil War books are arranged like this: OR's, Supplement to the OR's, Campaigns of the Civil War, Confederate bios, Union bios, general reference books about the Civil War, Eastern Theater campaign/battle studies, Western Theater campaign/battle studies, Confederate cavalry, Union cavalry, Union regimental histories, Confederate regimental histories, Union memoirs/letters, Confederate memoirs/letters, miscellaneous. My American Revolution books are in a separate bookcase. The rest are arranged according to topics, such as World War I, World War II, Korean War, etc.

This is my new desk. There are three shelves of oversized books above the desk, and if you look carefully, you will see my Ulric Dahlgren bobblehead on the bottom shelf of books.

 ********************************************************************************************************

Q: What's next on the "To Buy" list?

A: It's too long to repeat here. :-)

Q: Well, I see some empty space on one of your bookshelves in the photo, so that's good.

This is the right wall, which is longer than the left wall, and has more storage capacity. Fortunately, I have some empty shelf space and room to continue to grow.

Spotlight on . . . Pages of the Past

This month, we are pleased to broaden the scope of our Spotlight column. We will now occasionally feature reseller accounts that we work with on a regular basis. These bookstores, museum gift shops, and battlefield park Visitor Center stores deserve your support and play a huge role in the success of Savas Beatie and our authors. We hope that this column makes you want to support them even more! First up: Julie and Lucas Cade, owners of Pages of the Past.

Q: How long has Pages of the Past been in business?

A: We opened in August 2010 and relocated to our current location in March 2013.

Q: How did you come up with your business name?

A: Deciding upon our business name was quite the process! Over a period of several months, we contemplated many options. We finally took into consideration the nature of our business and the historical location before deciding upon "Pages of the Past."

Q: Where are you located?

A: 13 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA - just off the square in the heart of downtown.

Here is a photo of the SB and Pages of the Past teams when Sarah, Ted, and Helene visited Gettysburg in July 2013. Left to right: Sarah Keeney, author Lance Herdegen, Ted Savas, Helene Dodier, and Lucas Cade.

************************************************************************************

Q: Are your customers mainly locals or tourists?

A: Because we carry a vast range of history and history-related titles, we serve a unique blend of both local and tourist customers. Despite our status as a specialty store, our local presence has increased in large part due to our ability to order selections from all genres. Conversely, we have found that many tourists return frequently to Gettysburg, often dropping in for visits again and again. We have made friends from locales all over the world.

Q: If a new customer was to walk into your store on a typical day, what would they see?

A: It's not so much what they would see, but rather what they would experience. They would obviously see hundreds of books, but they would also hear relaxing music, smell a brewed cup of coffee, find multiple gift items through which to browse, or grab a brief respite in a front porch style rocking chair. In short, our customers will find a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Q: What types of books do you carry, and how is your selection organized?

A: We specialize in non-fiction history from Ancient to 20th Century with an emphasis on Civil War and Gettysburg titles; however, we also carry historical fiction/historical mystery, literary classics, biographies, children's books, along with a variety of local book club reads. There is truly something for every reader! Our selections are organized by category: Gettysburg & Civil War, American History, Military (by conflict), Classic Literature, European History, Historical Fiction, Biographies, a specific Lincoln section, and Local history. The Children's section is organized identically.

Q: Thanks for sharing, Julie and Lucas. Any final thoughts?

A: We are committed completely to supporting the community economy, so we actively promote shop local campaigns. A vibrant Main Street with independent businesses serves to strengthen the community ties. This is especially necessary in an already famous locale like Gettysburg where visitors come from all over the nation and world.
