Advancing Economic Success Workshop

Our 2-day workshop in Washington, D.C., in partnership with the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group (CSG), was a great success! Community Foundation leaders across the country shared their experiences and expertise related to community development philanthropy.

All of the presentation materials and information from the workshop are available at www.advancingcdp.org.

During the conference, Judy Sjostedt, Executive Director of Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates (PACF), introduced their 'Civic Leaders Fellowship Program' which provides summer employment opportunities and a program of civic leadership development for college students who reside in the Foundation's service area. The program allows these college students to build their network and envisions a future where they stay in the region.

A Dialogue on Generational Diversity--webinar series

We held our second webinar in the series: "Engaging the Generations in Philanthropy" on April 2. Our co-presenters - Judy Johnson, Executive Director of the Washington Community Foundation in Indiana, and Bonnie Hildreth, President and CEO of the Barry Community Foundation in Michigan - provided invaluable insights into how they engage generations in philanthropy and what they have learned in the process. My colleague, Craig Schroeder, identified 5 key takeaways. I hope you find them helpful as you are thinking about how to engage generations in your community:

  1. Do not micro-manage young people.
  2. Clarify younger generations tasks and have some structure on creativity.
  3. Identify project-focused opportunities.
  4. Create opportunities for dialogue across generations allowing them to build and strengthen relationships.
  5. Encourage high school students to mentor elementary school students to sustain long-term engagement strategy.

We are looking forward to the final webinar in the series scheduled for April 23.

Keeping the End in Mind - "In the vision of Jeff Yost of the Nebraska Community Foundation, the development of rural America is more than a challenge of money. Many rural advocates have been asking - and hoping - for American foundations, largely headquartered and focused in urban areas, to rediscover the rural roots of their wealth, to remember the 30 million Americans who live in rural communities, to take note of the lower incomes and higher poverty they endure, and to respond by devoting a larger cut of their grant dollars to nonmetropolitan regions."
