A Dialogue on Generational Diversity
and Community Building
The first step in addressing critical community issues is to understand your starting point, including your community's unique generational makeup. Some communities are aging naturally as population declines, while others are intentionally attracting retirees. Others are luring tech-savvy millennials or those seeking a small town quality of life. Whatever your community's unique situation, you will be better equipped to support the community building process if you understand generational diversity.
We invite you to join us in an upcoming three-part webinar series, A Dialogue on Generational Diversity and Community Building. We will:
  • Share research on the generational makeup of the U.S. and its implications for community decision making.
  • Share stories and ideas for engaging the generations in community philanthropy.
  • Share stories and ideas for engaging the generations in community development.
My colleagues Craig Schroeder and Deb Markley, and I produced a podcast to discuss the importance of generational diversity research and to introduce the webinar series in March and April. This podcast along with other information can be found on our website here or register now.

Advancing Economic Success Workshop - Community Foundations Building Family, Community & Regional Prosperity

Date: March 16-17, 2015

Location: Washington, DC

The Center is partnering with The Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group to present "Advancing Economic Success - Community Foundations Building Family, Community and Regional Prosperity," a 2-day workshop March 16-17. This peer exchange workshop will provide an opportunity for community foundation leaders (staff, board, and volunteers) to more deeply explore and share how they are addressing critical community issues and working to advance regional development in ways that build wealth for all. Using the organizing framework of Community Development Philanthropy, you will hear stories from community foundations that are helping families get ahead and those that are helping local and regional economies get ahead. As you listen to your peers and share your own insights, you will be developing Action Idea Takeaways as next steps for when you return home.

Boston College's Center on Wealth and Philanthropy to Close
"For nearly a half-century, Boston College's Center on Wealth and Philanthropy has taken an unusual approach to studying the charitable giving of the very rich, examining not just how much they give but why they do it and asking whether great wealth comes with an ethical obligation to be financially generous.
Now, as Boston is enjoying one of the most affluent period in its history, the [Center on Wealth and Philanthropy] is preparing to close, an irony not lost on Phil Buchanan." Read more here.
