Great Time at Entrepreneurship Camps!

Craig Schroeder

This is a very busy time of year with youth entrepreneurship camps underway all across rural America! Two weeks ago, I had the great privilege to facilitate a four-day camp with 23 middle school youth from Phillips and Sedgwick counties in Colorado. This high-energy activity launched their multiyear, "Youth Engagement Project" being led by Connie Juhl, Executive Director of Sedgwick County Economic Development and Julie Worley, Executive Director of Phillips County Economic Development. Their collaborative program recently received a significant grant from the Daniels Fund in Denver, and has over 40 local funding, business and education partners engaged.

It was indeed an intensive four days with the youth working in teams to create seven business ventures, which are now open to sell goods and services over the remainder of the summer. In addition, the youth visited several local businesses in both counties, learned from guest adult entrepreneurs about keys for operating successful businesses and attended the movie, "Farmland," sponsored by local businesses.

The youth worked very hard and wowed the adult panel on the last day of the camp with their business presentations complete with sample products and sales order forms. They also played their radio ads that they recorded at the local radio station during the camp.

Once school resumes, we will bring all the youth back together to review their sales experiences over the summer. Any money the seven youth teams make they will keep to invest back into their businesses or spend and give a boost to the local economy.

Summer camps are a great way to expose youth at a young age to the concept of entrepreneurship as a possible career path. Other great learning opportunities include after-school programs and weekend events, in addition to school-based entrepreneurship programs with hands-on community learning activities.

Transformation CEO Youth Entrepreneurship Program
July 30, 2014 Webinar
Several months ago, we shared a story about one of the most outstanding youth entrepreneurship programs in the nation created by Craig Lindvahl, an inspiring high school teacher in Effingham County, Illinois. This program helps communities mitigate the threat of outmigration, connects young people with business professionals in transformational ways, and provides ways for communities to create their own next generation of business owners. The program is now expanding with classes in Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota.  You have the opportunity to learn from Craig and be inspired to change the lives of entrepreneurial youth in your community by participating in our webinar July 30th.  Register here and don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the best!
