RHD and Equal Dollars Help NJ Families Affected by Sandy
On Monday, January 21st, 2013, Equal Dollars (RHD) took part in Resources for Human Development's (RHD) 25th Annual Day of Service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, there was an amazing turnout of volunteers of all ages that came together to make a difference. The volunteers along with RHD staff participated in several service projects and activities designed to celebrate Dr. King's message.
Equal Dollars participated in one of the service projects which supported families suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. In lieu of the Equal Dollars Monday Food Distribution Market, which provides discounted food to Equal Dollars members in the Philadelphia area, items like bread, produce and canned goods were donated to Brick Township, New Jersey. This project was done in partnership with Operation Brick Food Relief and RHD New Jersey programs. Food Market manager Ben Kincaid, accompanied by a few intrepid food market volunteers, traveled over an hour and a half to help distribute the food once it arrived in New Jersey.

 Black History Month Profile
Alain LeRoy Locke
Every February, America celebrates the amazing African-American writers, artists, economists, philosophers, scholars and progressive thinkers that helped transform the state of race relations in the US. For our February Black History profile, we wanted to share more information with our members about one of the faces of Equal Dollars, Alain LeRoy Locke.
A Philadelphia native born in 1885, Locke attended Central High School and went on to earn degrees in English and Philosophy from Harvard University. Upon his graduation, Locke became the first African-American to receive the Rhodes Scholarship, which is widely considered the most prestigious scholarship in the world. Locke went on to become a professor of English at Howard University and was eventually named the chair of the University's philosophy department. Click here to read more...

Thirsty? Equal Dollars is selling cases of water!
In January, 600 cases of water were donated to Equal Dollars. Thanks to the help of volunteers, we were able to sell about 500 of these cases in one afternoon! The cases were sold for $1 and 1 Equal Dollar. If a member purchased 10 cases, they got the discounted rate of $8 and 8 Equal Dollars. Twelve of the remaining cases were given to hard-working volunteers at RHD's annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 21st. While supplies last, the rest of the cases will be sold at the weekly food markets on Mondays, so be sure to keep your eyes open!

Equal Dollars Member Spotlight
Alfred Mays
For our first Equal Dollars member spotlight of 2013 we chose to speak with Alfred Mays. Mr. Mays volunteers at both the weekly Equal Dollars Food Market and at Kailo Haven, an RHD affiliate that helps clients deal with issues associated with addiction recovery, homelessness and behavioral health. Alfred has been an Equal Dollars member for over a year now, and began volunteer work with the Kailo Haven program after benefiting from their services in the past. We asked Mr. Mays to explain a little about how Kailo Haven works and how Equal Dollars can help facilitate the recovery process among their clients.
"[Kailo Haven] acts as a safe haven for their clients, but it also helps them get their necessary paperwork from the state like their birth certificate, ID, driver's license etc. It also works with different organizations like Pathways, the Philadelphia Housing Authority and others to help them get housing if they need it. Also, if there are clients who have a problem with addiction to drugs or alcohol, we can direct them to a rehabilitation center that will help them deal with it."

Since it is related to Western cabba ge, bok choy is sometimes referred to as Chinese cabbage. Cultivated in China since ancient times, bok choy is found in many Asian-inspired soups, appetizers and main dishes. Bok choy's sweet flavor and crisp texture makes it a popular favorite. Not only is it high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and calcium but it is also low in calories. Purchase some bok choy at the next food market and add it to your diet with these healthy and delicious recipes!
