For A Nation Free of Hunger & Homelessness
Equal Dollars Food Box Donations
Did you know that Pennsylvania's First Congressional District ranks fourth highest for food hardship in the United States? (The district includes parts of Central Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, Chester, and a small section of Delaware County.) Also, each year, 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness.
National Hunger & Homeless Awareness Week is a national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness. This year, Equal Dollars Community Currency decided to participate in the week by conducting a food drive. Thanks to the generous donations of Equal Dollars members, over fifty boxes filled with fresh produce, bread, and beverages were sent to help families in Philadelphia.

Equal Dollars Brings Film Series to Members and Community
Starting in 2013, Equal Dollars will begin screening a series of films intended to raise awareness about some of the issues our program helps to address, including debt, the monetary system and urban agriculture. Equal Dollars will use space provided by our local business partners to screen these films in order to support our member businesses and promote the ideals of locality and community involvement that are essential to our program. Some possible film titles include:
The Money Fix Fixing the Future The Money Trap Growing Cities Urban Roots And many more!
We will have more details about our films series upcoming in the New Year, so stay tuned and get ready for a great opportunity to support local business, meet fellow Equal Dollars members and learn about some of the major issues facing our economy and our world today.

Equal Dollars Member Spotlight
Tyren Patrick, Treasure Chest Coordinator, sits down with Mike Beitcher, Equal Dollars Intern, to discuss his passion for fashion and Equal Dollars

Our spotlight member this month is Tyren Patrick, coordinator of the Treasure Chest Boutique. Running this Equal Dollars program with the help of some great volunteers has allowed Tyren to combine his passion for fashion design with his belief in the Equal Dollars system.
"[Equal Dollars director] Deneene Brockington is my next door neighbor, and being a fashion designer, she thought that I would be able to help this program. So that was my objective at the start, just to help organize it and turn it into more than just a thrift store. So I came in and just did what I do best, which is creating order, and we turned it into more than just a closet. We turned it into a real boutique."
I asked Tyren how he was able to accomplish such a difficult task in just under a year and how he would describe his experience with Equal Dollars and the Treasure Chest up to this point.
