CALC Community Events Calendar
Greetings!

The posting of events does not imply an endorsement of the sponsoring groups or their political views.  We post events sponsored by other groups when we think the topics will be of interest to CALC's members and friends.  Often we have a close working relationship with those groups, but not always.  Only CALC-sponsored or co-sponsored events carry our specific endorsement.

JANUARY 4, 5:30 FRIDAY NIGHT ART WALK

SLEEPS ADDS "STREET ART AND THEATER" AND INVITES THE COMMUNITY JOIN US IN SUPPORT AND ENJOYMENT!

Eugene's First Friday Art Walk is an opportunity to show off and support Eugene's creative talent. This Friday, December 4, SLEEPS will be informally adding "street art and theater" from Eugene's creative "street people", those who are currently unhoused, to the event.

Once you leave the 5:30 stop at MECCA by the railroad tracks for the 6:00 stop at Clark Studio 760 West Broadway, watch for SLEEPS enroute.

Our goal is to add informally to the Friday Art Walk, not to detract from it in any way. We are not an official participant in the event. We will NOT be present at the various private studios being featured, we will only be on the corners and streets "along the way".

You will find some of Eugene's finest offerings in the featured Studios but Street Art belongs on the streets....and that is where you will find us.

So look for us on the streets and street corners BETWEEN these venues and enjoy the art both on and off the streets!:

5:30 MECCA near the railroad tracks

6:00 Clark Studio 760 Willamette

6:30 New Zone 164 West Broadway

7:00 Jazz Studio 124 West Broadway

7:30 Nest 1235 Willamette
Saturday
January 5th
2:00 p.m.
Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 3925 Hilyard Street, Eugene, Oregon

The City of Eugene recently approved the Conestoga Hut as part of St. Vincent de Paul's Car Camping Program. Episcopal Church of the Resurrection has volunteered to be the first host site for two huts.  Please come help celebrate this victory and help assemble the units!

Two houseless people who have been involved in recent Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Places to Sleep (SLEEPS) activities will be the first Conestoga Hut residents.

The press conference speakers include Dan Bryant, Opportunity Village Eugene (OVE) Board Chairman and Pastor of First Christian Church, Michael Carrigan, OVE Steering Committee Member and Community Organizer for Community Alliance of Lane County (CALC) and a representative from Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. Organizers hope one or both of the Hut residents also will be available to help with Hut construction and to provide interviews.

This event is brought to you by Opportunity Village Eugene (OVE) and Community Supported Shelters.  Community Supported Shelters, a program of Eugene business Tine Hive, joins together local businesses, organizations and volunteers to build small dwellings for the underserved population.

Please contact Dan Bryant at 541 344-1425 or Erik de Buhr at 541 606-3480 with questions.

Reclaim the Plaza: A Free Speech Celebration

Monday, January 7th
10:30 pm.  Corner of 8th and Oak Streets
Eugene

Celebrate freedom, stand up for your rights, and stand in solidarity with community members who wish to legally challenge Lane County's unconstitutional 11:00 pm curfew at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza. Bring joy, cookies, protest signs, and musical instruments.

Article 1, Section 8 of the Oregon Constitution states the following:

"No law shall be passed restraining the free expression of opinion, or restricting the right to speak, write, or print freely on any subject whatever; but every person shall be responsible for the abuse of this right."

The Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza "curfew" is an unconstitutional restraint upon free speech and public assembly, and this is a call to action for all citizens of Eugene to stand up for the Constitution and the right to protest 24-7 in traditional public forums such as the Plaza.

Our aim is to have the curfew declared unconstitutional in a court of law.
Senator Ron Wyden Lane County Town Hall Meeting 2013

January 07, 2013 2:00 PM

Trudy Cooper of Portland will report on a recent trip to Pakistan, where a CODEPINK delegation witnessed the devastation caused by more than 300 U.S. drone strikes in the past four years. The people of Waziristan have suffered as many as 3000 casualties from those attacks.

Cooper will show pictures and tell stories of students, teachers, children, and women killed when drone-launched missiles destroyed their homes. The delegation met with survivors of those attacks, who are trying to live on amid that destruction and the ongoing threat of these terrible weapons.

In response to the growing use of drones by U.S. military and intelligence forces and the denials of civilian casualties, a movement against drones is building. Please join us to learn more and find out about drone-resistance activities in the Eugene-Springfield area.

Responsible Travel: Cambodia
Thursday, January 10, 6:00 p.m.,
Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive

"Responsible travel" is a new way to see the world for those who have had enough of mass tourism. Key priorities are respecting and benefiting local people and the environment, which also enriches the traveler's experience.

Shoshana Kerewsky will give a richly-illustrated talk about the practice of responsible travel, with her own recent trips to Cambodia as an example. She will share how these journeys have changed the way she treks the globe, interacts with people across cultures, and supports environmental initiatives. Sponsored by Eugene Public Library, Non-Profit Management Institute at LCC Small Business Development
Center, and Women's Opportunity Worldwide. Free. Information: 541-682-5450 or www.eugene-or.gov/library

HIV Alliance supports individuals living with HIV/AIDS and preventing new infections. Today we ask you to help us in preventing those new infections.

A third of the people infected with HIV, do not know that they are infected. This undiagnosed population transmit the vast majority of new infections.

Only 42% of Oregonians have ever been tested for HIV. We want to change that.
