Greetings!

The posting of events does not imply an endorsement of the sponsoring groups or their political views.  We post events sponsored by other groups when we think the topics will be of interest to CALC's members and friends.  Often we have a close working relationship with those groups, but not always.  Only CALC-sponsored or co-sponsored events carry our specific endorsement.

For location: call
FREE

The Eugene/Springfield chapter of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will hold its monthly meeting for parents on Thursday, October 18, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  The group offers support and information to parents of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Newcomers are welcome. Admission is free.

The usual meeting time is the 3rd Thursday evening of each month; location varies. For more information, including this month's location, call
 or e-mail
Eugene/Springfield Solidarity Network's Solidarity Rally at Safeway

When: Friday October 19th 5pm-6pm

Where: Safeway Store on W. 18th and Oak St., Eugene

ESSN members and a group of local
citizens will shop together at the Safeway store on W 18th and Oak Streets
in Eugene, to show solidarity with Lane County grocery workers who have
been without a contact for twenty months. The workers tell us that
employers are asking them to accept a contract that will gut their health
care plan, hurting not only themselves, but their families and communities
as well. While we are shopping in the Safeway store on 10-19 we will let
management know that we stand with our grocery workers in their fight for
a fair contract with affordable healthcare.

We will gather in the parking lot at 5 pm. This will not be antagonistic
action. We will meet with fellow citizens and workers, enter the store,
some may shop, and those who wish to express solidarity will present a
paper petition showing support for a fair contract. Copies of the petition
will be available at 5 pm, before we enter the store. We can hand those
petitions to a manager or to an employee in the store.

Please join us for this important action in support of the 1100 local
grocery workers in Lane County.
The S-Word: The Squaw Stereotype in American Popular Culture
Tuesday, October 23
6:00 p.m.
Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive

The few times that Native American women are represented in television, films, ads, or popular music, it is usually in one of two stereotypical ways: Indian princess (young, female noble savage) or squaw (older woman/drudge). The use of the word "squaw" in place names, products, and elsewhere has also contributed to a climate of stereotypical thinking about Indian women.

Deb Merskin presents an illustrated talk exploring the use of this word and examining questions of who has the right to represent others, under what circumstances, and in what ways. An Associate Professor at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, her work focuses on the representation of women and minorities in media and historical studies as well as the social influences of the media. Sponsored by Eugene Public Library and the Road Scholars program of the University of Oregon Center for the Study of Women in Society. Free. Information: 541-682-5450,

Holly Near is a unique combination of entertainer, teacher, and activist. An immense vocal talent, Near's career as a singer has been defined by an unwillingness to separate her passion for music from her passion for human dignity. She is a skilled performer and an outspoken ambassador for peace who brings to the stage an integration of world consciousness, spiritual discovery, and theatricality.

Although she sang in public from the age of eight, Ms. Near's professional career began with numerous performances in film and television, and a run in the Broadway production of Hair. Torn between a career as an actor or a singer, Ms. Near chose to pursue her love of music, especially that music which articulated the social conditions of the world community.

Some of her work includes:

One of the "1000 Women for Peace" nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005

Presented at the National Women's History Project's 2003 conference at Smith College

Spoke to workers at Intel's Albuquerque, NM facility about tolerance and diversity

Delivered the prestigious Ware Lecture for the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly in 2005

In 1972, Holly Near was one of the first women to create an independent record company. Although unusual then, many artists now follow that path of independence. Near's vision was to promote and produce music by politically conscious artists from around the world-a mission that Redwood Records fulfilled for nearly 20 years.

A prolific writer and recording artist, Near has released 26 recordings of her own, including the seminal Imagine My Surprise, and performs as a guest on many others. In the past few years, Near has been busy re-releasing much of her early material. She continues to write and sing political songs with grace and humor, and her integrity earns her the reputation as one of the most articulate social change artists working today, with a power and maturity that may only come from decades of love and fear, despair, and inspiration.

What Motivates People to Help Others in Need?
Thursday, November 8, 6:00 p.m.
Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive

More than six billion people inhabit planet Earth. About one billion enjoy a high standard of living unprecedented in human history, while another billion live in extreme poverty, subject to great risk from hunger, disease, natural disasters, and human malevolence.

Recognizing the crucial need to motivate the wealthy to voluntarily share resources with the poor, Paul Slovic and his colleagues research what motivates people to aid others.  In this talk, Slovic will share knowledge gleaned from laboratory experiments and surveys addressing questions including: How do our emotions motivate or impede decisions to help others?  How do we decide when to give aid and how much to give? How can charitable donations and humanitarian contributions be increased?

Two Among the Righteous Few: A Story of Courage in the Holocaust
Saturday, November 10, 3:00 p.m.
Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive

In a talk based on his book, "Two Among the Righteous Few," Marty Brounstein tells a remarkable true tale of interfaith courage and compassion. He shares the story of Frans and Mien Wijnakker, two of the "Righteous Among the Nations" memorialized at Yad Vashem, the world center for documentation  and commemoration of the Holocaust.

This couple saved the lives of at least two dozen Jews in southern Holland during World War II. Catholics who led a simple life in a small town, they took risks and displayed bravery to help others in dire need, instilling hope during one of history's most horrific periods. Brounstein has spoken widely, including as the keynote speaker for this year's Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in Chicago. Free.

The Sand Mandala: Creating a Picture of Universal Compassion
Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive, Free
Opening ceremony: Friday, November 30, 10:30 a.m.

Construction of mandala:
Friday, November 30, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.;
Saturday, December 1, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.;
Sunday, December 2, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Closing ceremony: Sunday, December 2, 4:00 p.m.

The Monks of Drepung Loseling Phukhang Monastery, visiting from South India, will build a traditional Tibetan Buddhist Sand Mandala at the Downtown Eugene Public Library over the course of three days.
An Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 30, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., and a Closing Ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 2, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.  The public is invited to watch the process at any time on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when the Downtown Library is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The Opening Ceremony will consecrate the site with approximately 30 minutes of chanting, music, and mantra recitation. Then the monks will begin the exacting work of drawing the lines for the design of the mandala. Throughout the following days, the monks will skillfully pour millions of grains of brightly-colored sand from a funnel-shaped metal tool known as a "Chakpur," creating an astonishingly detailed work of art. During the Closing Ceremony, the monks will dismantle the Mandala, sweeping up the colored sand "to symbolize the impermanence of all phenomena, teaching that everything that exists has a beginning, a middle and an end."
