Head Lice Information Sheet
St. Anastasia School has recently detected several cases of head-lice that are currently being treated.   I appreciate the generous assistance that parent volunteers have provided to the school to help to improve awareness and assist us with checking heads. Affected classes have been thoroughly checked, cleaned, and treated. Teachers have been notified of preventative measures to take in the weeks ahead to prevent a recurrence of lice. The purpose of this flier is to inform and educate our families about head lice.
Head lice do not carry any disease, nor does their presence mean that you or your child are dirty. Contrary to popular belief, lice prefer to live on clean heads. A louse is as big as a sesame seed and cannot jump or fly  from person to person.  The "no-nit" policy of our school and the St. Lucie County School District states, that students will not be allowed to return to class until all lice and nits are removed. Volunteer nurses and administrative staff are typically used to check the children. However, parents should be checking their children regularly for lice.
The recommendations below should be followed by the entire family if you find lice on your child's head. After following these recommendations, please bring your child to the front office to be checked before you drop them off. Upon returning to school, your child will be inspected by a volunteer nurse or member of the staff to determine that all lice and nits (eggs) have been removed. If nits are found on your child's head, you will be required to take your child home for additional treatment and nit removal. If the following directions are followed, infected students should hopefully return to school within 48 hours of detection, depending on the severity of the infestation.
The initial removal of nits from your child's head will likely take 1-8 hours depending on the type of hair. The continuing process of nit picking and disinfecting your home may take two days. And, the complete treatment cycle, according to most literature, is expected to take 10-14 days.
Basic Head Louse Control Recommendations
  1. Live lice must be removed or killed. Mechanically removing head lice can be accomplished using a special fine-toothed comb which requires no use of pesticides. This method is time consuming but can be made easier after a treatment with ordinary hair conditioner. Various creams and shampoos which contain pesticides are available over the counter for treatment of head lice. These treatments are not always effective and can cause reactions in some children. There are two or three products available by prescription only, which are known to be quite effective at killing head lice. The prescription products do contain pesticides. Recently several new brands of head lice shampoos have become available over-the-counter which claim to be non-toxic and effective at killing lice. No known scientific reports exist as to their efficacy.
  2. Eggs (nits) of head lice should be removed from the child's hair. This step is the most crucial and will require most of your time and effort. There are no known products available over-the-counter which kill head lice eggs completely. Eggs must be removed using a fine-toothed comb or tweezers.
  3. Your child's bedding, clothes, and towels should be washed in warm soapy water and dried in a dryer on the "high heat" cycle. This step should be completed on the same day as above steps. Any personal items such as toys or stuffed animals which cannot be laundered must be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks. Although head lice live only on humans, this step will kill any lice or eggs which may have recently fallen off your child's head. Vacuuming carpets may also help.
