Dear Reader,

Our first art class of the series was wonderful! If you have any interest please join us on one or more of the next dates. Except for April 18, we'll be here for the next 8 weeks from 2 to 4.  Marshall Hasbrouck is a wonderful teacher for all levels.

Today is the Earth Day celebration on the Plaza outside our doors and there are booths, information and food trucks right out there. Please get to know downtown, there's a lot of good stuff going on!

We have a fun addition to this month's events.

A concert! We were offered the opportunity to host a pair of country singers and we jumped at it! Please plan to join us on Saturday, April 25 for Judy Coder and Jennifer Epps, sometimes known as the Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band.  Here's a link to show them off!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTY70iDzfG4

At only $15 you can have an up close and personal concert right here. Come on in for a great evening of music.

And now, on to the books.

Happy reading,

Luan

A Sudden Light by Garth Stein $26.95 In the summer of 1990, fourteen-year-old Trevor Riddell gets his first glimpse of Riddell House. Built from the spoils of a massive timber fortune, the legendary family mansion is constructed of giant, whole trees, and is set on a huge estate overlooking Puget Sound. Trevor's bankrupt parents have begun a trial separation, and his father, Jones Riddell, has brought Trevor to Riddell House with a goal: to join forces with his sister, Serena, dispatch Grandpa Samuel--who is flickering in and out of dementia--to a graduated living facility, sell offthe house and property for development into "tract housing for millionaires," divide up the profits, and live happily ever after. But Trevor soon discovers there's someone else living in Riddell House: a ghost with an agenda of his own.
By the author of The Art of Racing in the Rain. Which I loved.

Falling In Love by Donna Leon $26  Donna Leon's Death at La Fenice, the first novel in her beloved Commissario Guido Brunetti series, introduced readers to the glamorous and cutthroat world of opera and one of Italy's finest living sopranos, Flavia Petrellithen a suspect in the poisoning of a renowned German conductor. Years after Brunetti cleared her name, Flavia has returned to Venice and La Fenice to sing the lead inTosca.
Brunetti and his wife, Paola, attend an early performance, and Flavia receives a standing ovation. Back in her dressing room, she finds bouquets of yellow roses; too many roses. Every surface of the room is covered with them. An anonymous fan has been showering Flavia with these beautiful gifts in London, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, and now, Venice, but she no longer feels flattered. A few nights later, invited by Brunetti to dine at his in-laws' palazzo, Flavia confesses her alarm at these excessive displays of adoration. And when a talented young Venetian singer who has caught Flavia's attention is savagely attacked, Brunetti begins to think that Flavia's fears are justified in ways neither of them imagined. He must enter in the psyche of an obsessive fan before Flavia, or anyone else, comes to harm.

The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson $15.99

In a tiny shack in the largest township in South Africa, Nombeko Mayeki is born. Put to work at five years old and orphaned at ten, she quickly learns that the world expects nothing more from her than to die young. But Nombeko has grander plans. She learns to read and write, and at just fifteen, using her cunning and fearlessness, she makes it out of Soweto with millions of smuggled diamonds in her possession. Then things take a turn for the worse....

Nombeko's life ends up hopelessly intertwined with the lives of Swedish twins intent on bringing down the Swedish monarchy. In this wild romp, Jonasson tackles issues ranging from the pervasiveness of racism to the dangers of absolute power. In the satirical voice that has earned him legions of fans the world over, he gives us another rollicking tale of how even the smallest of decisions can have global consequences.

Two local titles that we have in stock for you to know about:

My Town Montclair by Montclair photographer Reenie Raschke $40  This is a lovely and loving portrait of a community by someone who knows it well.  Makes a great gift to anyone who knows Oakland and her neighborhoods! Also a great look at what can be considered a small town within our borders.

Spreading Their Wings, Victorian Women & The Ebell Society by the Camron-Stanford House in Oakland. $25  The Ebell Society was an organization dedicated to education for women in a time when it wasn't quite the thing to be supporting. Dr. Adrian John Ebell was instrumental in starting an Oakland chapter of the International Academy and the Ebell Society for the Advancement of Women was born. Read all about it in this fascinating book.

None of the Above by I. W. Gregorio $17.99

A groundbreaking story about a teenage girl who discovers she's intersex . . . and what happens when her secret is revealed to the entire school. Incredibly compelling and sensitively told, None of the Above is a thought-provoking novel that explores what it means to be a boy, a girl, or something in between.

What if everything you knew about yourself changed in an instant?

I highly recommend reading this book if you're curious about what it means to be intersex. Gregorio gets into Kristen's head and beautifully portrays her confusion, need for information, and fear of being the Other in her school when she's always been one of the popular kids.    13 to (and including) adult

Vegetables in Underwear by Jared Chapman $14.95

A bunch of friendly vegetables wear colorful underwear of all varieties-big, small, clean, dirty, serious, and funny-demonstrating for young ones the silliness and necessity of this item of clothing. The unexpectedness of vegetables in their unmentionables is enough to draw giggles, but the pride with which the "big kid" attire is flaunted in front of the baby carrots in diapers will tickle readers of all ages. With rhyming text that begs to be chanted aloud and art that looks good enough to eat, this vibrant story will encourage preschoolers to celebrate having left those diapers behind!
