Click here to see a video for it. Trevor is the one who came in and introduced us to this ingenious book stand.
He was charming and a very good demonstrator.

Courtesy of Rob Brewer. I find this disturbing. Especially how reading declines after childhood. Do you know someone who could be reading more?

Dear Reader,

Happy November! The leaves are turning and there's a nip in the air. I do love fall!

There are lots of things to read and you'll see many new ones below.

Don't forget that we're booking up some Sundays with cool events. The one on the 17th now has an added bonus.

And watch for more fun events to come.

Happy Reading,

New and Notable
The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan  $29.99

Spanning more than forty years and two continents, The Valley of Amazement resurrects pivotal episodes in history: from the collapse of China's last imperial dynasty, to the rise of the Republic, the explosive growth of lucrative foreign trade and anti-foreign sentiment, to the inner workings of courtesan houses and the lives of the foreign "Shanghailanders" living in the International Settlement, both erased by World War II.

A deeply evocative narrative about the profound connections between mothers and daughters, The Valley of Amazement returns readers to the compelling territory of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. With her characteristic insight and humor, she conjures a story of inherited trauma, desire and deception, and the power and stubbornness of love. *We have a limited number of signed first editions*

This is a Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett  $27.99
Blending literature and memoir, this new book takes us into the very real world of Ann Patchett's life. Stretching from her childhood to the present day, from a disastrous early marriage to a later happy one, it covers a multitude of topics, including relationships with family and friends, and charts the hard work and joy of writing, and the unexpected thrill of opening a bookstore.
As she shares stories of the people, places, ideals, and art to which she has remained indelibly committed, Ann Patchett brings into focus the large experiences and small moments that have shaped her as a daughter, wife, and writer.

House Girl by Tara Conklin $14.99

Weaving together the story of an escaped slave in the pre-Civil War South and a determined junior lawyer, The House Girl follows Lina Sparrow as she looks for an appropriate lead plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking compensation for families of slaves. In her research, she learns about Lu Anne Bell, a renowned prewar artist whose famous works might have actually been painted by her slave, Josephine.

Sycamore Row by John Grisham $28.95

John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history.
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.
The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton $27
Prostitute Anna Wetherell is arrested on the same day that three men with various connections to her disappear from a coastal New Zealand town during the 1866 gold rush in this new novel from the author of The Rehearsal.  Oh, and it's the new Man Booker Prize winner!

Two Old Women by Vilma Wallis  $14.99

Based on an Athabascan Indian legend passed along for many generations from mothers to daughters of the upper Yukon River Valley in Alaska, this is the suspenseful, shocking, ultimately inspirational tale of two old women abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine.

Though these women have been known to complain more than contribute, they now must either survive on their own or die trying. In simple but vivid detail, Velma Wallis depicts a landscape and way of life that are at once merciless and starkly beautiful. In her old women, she has created two heroines of steely determination whose story of betrayal, friendship, community, and forgiveness "speaks straight to the heart with clarity, sweetness, and wisdom" (Ursula K. Le Guin).

Chasing Utopia by Nikki Giovanni $19.99

One of America's most celebrated poets whose works have spurred movements, inspired songs, turned hearts and informed generations pays homage to gatherings of friends, family and lovers where, at the center, is food as sustenance, as aphrodisiac and as memory.

Everything this week is about the 8th installment of the Wimpy Kid series.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid #8; Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney $13.99  Greg Heffley's on a losing streak. His best friend, Rowley Jefferson, has ditched him, and finding new friends in middle school is proving to be a tough task. To change his fortunes, Greg decides to take a leap of faith and turn his decisions over to chance. Will a roll of the dice turn things around, or is Greg's life destined to be just another hard-luck story?
