Eye from the Edge, his remembrance of growing up in West Oakland

Dear Reader,

There's a chill in the air this week! I know it's cliche, but it really is a wonderful time to be in the windowseat with the sun coming in, a nip in the air outside, and a good book to get lost in.

Apparently I'm heading for more than a nip in the air by attending an annual bookselling institute in Kansas City this weekend. Booksellers from all across the country gather to share information, learn new things, and party, er, socialize. I'll post pics if I get to meet some wonderful authors as is usually the case. (Like the store's Facebook page to keep up!) So I should have some recharged batteries and new ideas next week!

Speaking of ideas- once again I'll just say if you have any suggestions for us, let me know. The year is starting off in an oddly slow fashion, so if there are things we can do entice you in, let us know. Better yet, encourage everyone you know to give us a try. We have the best customers anywhere, and would love more!

Don't forget that we're available 24/7 on our website. Research titles, order things, download ebooks, ship fabulous gifts to friends!

I mentioned our Used Book Blowout and they're going fast. Through the end of the month all hardcovers are $5, all trade paperbacks are $3, and all mass markets are $.50. We won't even add tax! Mystery fans have been happy! And the nonfiction is pretty eclectic.

 Happy Reading,

 Luan

PS: Don't forget our change in days. We're no longer open on Sunday. Probably until Labor day when we go 7 days again for the fall and holidays.

four seasons
The Four Season Farm Gardener's Cookbook by Barbara Damrosch & Eliot Coleman $22.95 It really is two books in one; a basic gardening book as well as a cookbook full of wonderful fresh food recipes. It's time to plan the garden if you haven't already!

silver linings
Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick $15  If you've seen the movie, you know what a complex and human story this is. But, of course, the book is soooo much more. Meet Pat Peoples. Pat has a theory: his life is a movie produced by God. And his God-given mission is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure him a happy ending-the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. (It might not come as a surprise to learn that Pat has spent several years in a mental health facility.) The problem is, Pat's now home, and everything feels off. No one will talk to him about Nikki; his beloved Philadelphia Eagles keep losing; he's being pursued by the deeply odd Tiffany; his new therapist seems to recommend adultery as a form of therapy. Plus, he's being haunted by Kenny G!

heading out to wonderful Heading Out to Wonderful by Robert Goolrick $14.95 It is the summer of 1948 when a handsome, charismatic stranger, Charlie Beale, recently back from the war in Europe, shows up in the town of Brownsburg, a sleepy village nestled in the Valley of Virginia. All he has with him are two suitcases: one contains his few possessions, including a fine set of butcher knives; the other is full of money. A lot of money.

For the Younger Reader!
Do you know a budding young filmmaker? Here's a book to help encourage them.
andrew jenksMy Adventures as a Young Filmmaker by Andrew Jenks $19.99  Behind the camera, Andrew Jenks has captured the attention of young adults everywhere with his innovative MTV documentary series, World of Jenks. When asked about his inspiration for the show, Jenks said, "I want to tell the stories of my generation. I want to be a filmmaker that is able to capture what my generation thinks, how they act, and what they ultimately stand for."
Now fans of all ages will be able to discover everything they've ever wanted to know about Jenks, from growing up to becoming a renowned documentary filmmaker in this comprehensive photo-biography. How did he do it? By following his own rules for success-always be flexible, fake it till you make it, and never accept no. 10 and up.

hold fast Hold Fast by Blue Balliett $17.99 Where is Early's father? He's not the kind of father who would disappear. But he's gone . . . and he's left a whole lot of trouble behind.
As danger closes in, Early, her mom, and her brother have to flee their apartment. With nowhere else to go, they are forced to move into a city shelter. Once there, Early starts asking questions and looking for answers. Because her father hasn't disappeared without a trace. There are patterns and rhythms to what's happened, and Early might be the only one who can use them to track him down and make her way out of a very tough place.  9 and up.

down the rabbit Down the Rabbit Hole, The Diary of Pringle Rose, Chicago, Illinois, 1871 by Susan Campbell Bartoletti
In the spring of 1871, fourteen-year-old Pringle Rose learns that her parents have been killed in a terrible carriage accident. After her uncle Edward and his awful wife, Adeline, move into the Pringle family's home -- making life for her and her younger brother, Gideon, unbearable -- Pringle runs away with Gideon to Chicago, seeking refuge from the tragedy, and hoping to start a new life. She becomes a nanny for the children of a labor activist, and quickly finds herself caught up in a web of intrigue and lies. Then, when a familiar figure from home arrives, Pringle begins to piece together the devastating mystery of what happened to her parents, and realizes just how deadly the truth might be. But soon, one of the greatest disasters this country has ever known -- the Great Fire of Chicago -- flares up, and Pringle is on the run for her life.

city tossed A City Tossed and Broken, The Diary of Minnie Bonner, San Francisco, CA 1906 by Judy Blundell  When Minnie Bonner's father disappears after losing the Bonners' Philadelphia tavern, the wealthy gentleman Edward Sump, led by his avaricious wife, offers Minnie a chance to work as a lady's maid to support her family. The Sumps have grand plans, grander than the city of Philadelphia can offer, however, and decide to move to San Francisco -- the greatest city in the west. But when a powerful earthquake strikes, Minnie finds herself the sole survivor among them. After the dust settles, Minnie discovers a bag belonging to the Sumps filled with cash and papers that could drastically change her fortune. With no one else to claim it, Minnie has turned into an heiress overnight.

runaway The Runaway King by Jennifer A. Nielsen $17.99  This is the sequel to last year's The False Prince. Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom may be his only hope of saving it. But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom?
