Marshall
Saturday landscape class!
Marshall is a fabulous local painter who is teaching a landscape class every other Saturday. His site is fabulous. Contact him at mhasbrouck@yahoo.com or 510-681-4423.

Classes taught in various places, not at the store.

Dear Reader,

Finally, some winter weather. Well, winter for us. We're pretty lucky to have the mild weather we do. Well, I guess we make our own luck by living here. Hmm. That makes us pretty smart.

Whatever the case we do love to read. And we have more books to show off!

Be sure to come and see our book tree in the window. Guess the number of books in it to be eligible to win a $25 gift certificate.  And be sure to tell us what books you can't wait to give this holiday season. We love recommendations.

And for those of you who like ebooks, we are now carrying the Kobo e reader mini, and Glo. We've been using our demo model now for a while and it's pretty easy to navigate. Shortly we'll be taking Google ebooks off our website and adding the Kobo library of ebooks. Those of you who have Google ebooks won't lose them, or your ability to access them. They have decided not to make their library available to independent book stores any longer so we've found Kobo to be a good site. The app is easy to download to any device, except Kindle, and if you buy a Kobo reader from us it will automatically direct you to our site for buying books. For those who like their devices, this is a very good option.

 And now, books!

 Happy Reading,

 Luan

why grow that Why Grow That When You Can Grow This? by Andrew Keys $24.95

It's a tired turn of phrase, but the grass is always greener on the other side. And for gardeners, it's not just the grass -- it's the flowers, the shrubs, and the trees. No longer! Pining to grow lilac but lack the full sun? Try the fragrant pink and white flowers of Korean spice viburnum. Love the drama of canna but need something hardier? Try the bold foliage of variegated fleece flower. This book offers hundreds of all-star alternatives that replace -- and often outshine -- popular problem plants.

hands on Hands-On Healing Remedies: 150 Recipes for Herbal Balms, Salves, Oils, Liniments & Other Topical Therapies by Stephanie Tourles $18.95 It offers 150 original recipes for herbal balms, oils, salves, liniments, and other topical ointments you can make yourself to treat a wide range of conditions, from headaches and backaches to arthritis, tendonitis, fungal infections, anxiety, cuts and scrapes, insomnia, splinters, and cracked skin. These preparations are all-natural, effective, safe, and fun to prepare.

fairy talesFairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version by Philip Pullman $27.95 Two centuries ago, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published the first volume of "Children's and Household Tales." Now Philip Pullman, one of the most accomplished authors of our time, makes us fall in love all over again with the immortal tales of the Brothers Grimm. Suffused with romance and villainy, danger and wit, the Grimms' fairy tales have inspired Pullman's unique creative vision--and his beguiling retellings will draw you back into a world that has long cast a spell on the Western imagination.  You're never too old for fairy tales, or too young!

brave new worldsBrave New Worlds edited by John Joseph Adams $16.99 What happens when civilization invades and dictates every aspect of your life? From 1984 to The Handmaid's Tale, from Children of Men to Bioshock, the dystopian imagination has been a vital and gripping cautionary force. Brave New Worlds collects the best tales of totalitarian menace by some of today's most visionary writers, including Neil Gaiman, Paolo Bacigalupi, Orson Scott Card, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

how it all beganHow it All Began by Penelope Lively $16 A vibrant new novel from Man Booker Prize winner Lively--a wry, wise story about the surprising ways lives intersect. When Charlotte Rainsford, a retired schoolteacher, is accosted by a petty thief on a London street, the consequences ripple across the lives of acquaintances and strangers alike.

underside of joy Underside of Joy by Sere Prince Halverson $16 Set against the backdrop of redwood forests and shimmering vineyards, Halverson's compelling debut tells the story of two women, bound by an unspeakable loss, who each claims to be the mother of the same two children.

daniel stein Daniel Stein, Interpreter by Ludmila Ulitskaya $16.95 This innovative novel tells the story of Daniel Stein, a Polish Jew who narrowly survives the Holocaust by working for the Gestapo as an interpreter. After the war, he converts to Catholicism, becomes a priest, and finally emigrates to Israel. Despite this seemingly far-fetched progression, the life of Daniel Stein is not an invention--he is based on a real person, Oswald Rufeisen, a Carmelite priest. Winner of the Russian National Literary Prize and the Simone de Beauvoir Prize, and nominated for the Russian Booker Novel of the Decade, Ludmila Ulitskaya has earned accolades internationally for this groundbreaking work.
