Message from the Rabbi

A Wonderful Day in New York for GRS!

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday, as the sun shone brightly, students of our GRS Adult Education program and families joined together to celebrate our Jewish heritage in New York City.

One segment of our group visited the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side, which recalls the story of the Eastern European Jewish experience at the turn of the 19th century.

Others chose to join the thousands saluting Israel as delegations paraded up 5th Avenue.  It was a proud and joyous moment for all who cherish Israel, as we waved our flags, symbolically joining hands with Jews of so many religious and political ideologies. I look forward to a GRS delegation in future parades!

The day culminated with the full group joining together at the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first fully functional shul, built by Eastern European Jews in 1887.  The synagogue provided a haven for those who lived within the tenements of the Lower East Side.

As the Jewish population began its migration, and Jewish immigration to the United States became severely restricted in 1924, the synagogue fell into a state of disrepair, and the sanctuary ceased functioning for services.  In the 1980's, this landmark building underwent a full restoration which lasted for decades, and was ultimately restored to its full glory.  While few Jews inhabit the area at this time, The Eldridge Street Synagogue stands as a proud symbol of American Jewish history.

Of course, no visit to the lower East Side would be complete without the tastes and smells of the surrounding cultures, including the wonderful delights Chinatown and Little Italy. Needless to say, these neighborhoods provided delicious culinary additions to our visit.

It is always a great pleasure for our synagogue to venture beyond Greenwich.  If you are interested in Jewish cultural trips and experiences, please do not hesitate to inform either me, or our Adult Education Committee.

L'Shalom,

Rabbi Andy

Rabbi Andrew R. Sklarz, MSW

Generation J Registration is Now Open

As this school year closes, another opens - or at least registration does! CLICK HERE to access the online school registration forms for 2014-15. Feel free to use the form to register up to five children for Generation J. You can pay either by check or credit card; we are happy to announce that religious school fees will not increase this year! For your convenience, CLICK HERE to view the fee schedule.

When filling out the registration forms, please take the time to share with us information about your children as learners, as well as any medical information that might affect their experiences here at Generation J. This is critical to help us make religious school the best possible experience for each of our students, so we appreciate all the information you share, and we pledge to only share that information with staff as is necessary. Please know that we value your family's privacy, and feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.

For incoming 4th-7th grade students, weekday Hebrew is an integral part of their Generation J experience, so please be sure to fill out your first and second choices for Hebrew instruction time. Hebrew is optional for 3rd graders, as is a second weekday of Hebrew. If you are interested in a second day of Hebrew or you have multiple students to register for Hebrew, please contact us in the office so that we can be sure to accommodate your family's needs.

For incoming 8th -12th grade students, we have a number of opportunities available. We applaud their decision to continue to be an active young member at GRS, and we know they will have a great time. Families of post B'nai Mitzvah students should also use this form to register, and will receive a separate email soon about our new Confirmation Academy, as well as opportunities to be one of our madrichim (classroom aides) or join our Youth Group.

For pre-K students, our monthly Holiday Happening program will continue once per month. Tentative dates will be released soon.

Social Action Shabbat Service
Friday, June 27, 6:30
at the home of Helen & Bob Stark

On Friday June 27, GRS will be honoring our Social Action chairs, Joy Davis and Shelly Kaplan, and also celebrating the good deeds done by many of you in providing the monthly dinners at Insprica /St. Luke's.

We would also like to celebrate and give a shout out to the social action efforts that congregants perform in a myriad of other ways, and use the evening as a time to share the opportunities and experiences you may have had in the community.  If you aren't already engaged, it may be a great time to learn about what others are doing, and become involved yourself.

Please join us for a shabbat service followed by a cooperative dinner at the the home of Helen and Bob Stark.

CLICK HERE to let us know what side dish or dessert you would like to bring, and please also let us know if there is a volunteer activity that you would like to broadcast!

Enjoy the Sounds of the Shabbat
blessings and melodies on www.grs.org

Have you ever wanted to learn the Shabbat blessings and melodies, so that you can join us in the celebration of Shabbat?  It's as easy as clicking here to listen to Cantor Sabrina, accompanied by GRS pianist and choir director David Johnson, as recorded by congregant and videographer, Michael Chait.

Be Part of GRS' New and Important Social Action Committee Initiative!

The caring members of our GRS Social Action Committee continually take on projects in order to help those in need, both within our larger community and around the globe.  For years GRS has been collecting and cooking food which the members of the Social Action Committee, and more recently, the students of Gen J, have been serving each month at Inspirica. However, our relationship has recently expanded...

GRS is now "in partnership with Inspirica." Inspirica provides a host of services for those who are, as the motto expresses, journeying from "homelessness to home."  Inspirica's beautiful, modern facility is located on nearby Franklin Street in Stamford, close to the Greenwich border. We are seeking volunteers, adults and mature teens, who can lend their skills in the following areas, including:

  • tutoring
  • babysitting
  • offering children's recreational activities
  • helping prepare those who endeavor to enter the job market
  • in other various realms, including resume writing and interview skills.
We warmly welcome those willing to share their unique ideas and talents in ways not aforementioned, to support those adults and children currently living at Inspirica.  Our GRS Social Action Committee invites you to be a part of this important mitzvah. Please let us know your interest by contacting Laura in the GRS office.

Items below can be utilized in each of the ongoing donation programs:
  • New twin bed sheet sets, twin blankets, bath towels, washcloths
  • Personal hygiene items for men, women and children-Full size shampoos, soaps, conditioners, razors and deodorant
  • Frangrance free liquid laundy detergent
  • Disposable diapers - all sizes (newborn to training pants)
  • Baby wipes
  • Non-Perishable food

Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to donate and serve food the first Saturday of each month to Inspirica's Women's Shelter. To find out what is needed, you can contact the GRS Office or sign up at Shabbat Services. Forms will be on the Oneg Shabbat table or on each chair.
