Message from the Rabbi

Celebrating David Johnson: The Maestro of GRS

Dear Friends, Rabbi USE THIS ONE!

Have you ever attended a Broadway musical production, an opera or a high school performance in which the accompanists were paid the same homage as those on stage? And while you may remember a theme song from a movie, and the names of the lead actors, with the exception perhaps of Isaac Stern whose violin was heard throughout Fiddler on The Roof, can you name any musicians who played the score? I suspect the answer to both of these questions is "no." In truth, while musicians provide such an important dimension to a performance, I dare say, that they are the unsung heroes of the stage, or in our case, the bimah.

This Friday night GRS will celebrate the maestro of our congregation, David Johnson! For thirty years, David has been the man behind the scenes, whose musical talents have graced GRS. Ever on beat, David's artistry on piano and organ, and savoir faire with the choir uplifts our spirits and touches our souls, week after week. Indeed David's sensitive and creative musicality set the stage, if you will, for so many of the emotions we experience during the service.

Come join us, and lift a glass as we sing praises to David. This promises to be an evening filled with celebration, love and all sorts of surprises!

B'Shir - With Song,

Rabbi Andy

Generation J - Exploring Judaism Together

A HUGE thank you to our Olim class and our madrichim for putting on such a great Purim carnival! Last Sunday was great fun with pizza, popcorn, and prizes for everyone, and we couldn't have done it without our amazing students who helped to make it all happen. Our Purim Spiel was also a hit; we not only heard the story of Esther, but we found out that some of our Gen J parents were truly born for stardom! What was your favorite Purim activity this year?

Be Part of GRS' New and Important Social Action Committee Initiative!

The caring members of our GRS Social Action Committee continually take on projects in order to help those in need, both within our larger community and around the globe.  For years GRS has been collecting and cooking food which the members of the Social Action Committee, and more recently, the students of Gen J, have been serving each month at Inspirica. However, our relationship has recently expanded...

GRS is now "in partnership with Inspirica." Inspirica provides a host of services for those who are, as the motto expresses, journeying from "homelessness to home."  Inspirica's beautiful, modern facility is located on nearby Franklin Street in Stamford, close to the Greenwich border. We are seeking volunteers, adults and mature teens, who can lend their skills in the following areas, including:

  • tutoring
  • babysitting
  • offering children's recreational activities
  • helping prepare those who endeavor to enter the job market
  • in other various realms, including resume writing and interview skills.
We warmly welcome those willing to share their unique ideas and talents in ways not aforementioned, to support those adults and children currently living at Inspirica.  Our GRS Social Action Committee invites you to be a part of this important mitzvah. Please let us know your interest by contacting Laura in the GRS office.

Items below can be utilized in each of the ongoing donation programs:
  • New twin bed sheet sets, twin blankets, bath towels, washcloths
  • Personal hygiene items for men, women and children-Full size shampoos, soaps, conditioners, razors and deodorant
  • Frangrance free liquid laundy detergent
  • Disposable diapers - all sizes (newborn to training pants)
  • Baby wipes
  • Non-Perishable food

Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to donate and serve food the first Saturday of each month to Inspirica's Women's Shelter. To find out what is needed, you can contact the GRS Office or sign up at Shabbat Services.

JFS will provide confidential and secure video-conferencing services through its exclusive partnership with Vidyo, Inc.. As always, JFS support groups are facilitated by licensed, experienced social workers and confidentiality is strictly maintained. After an initial private assessment, participants will be given explicit instructions on how to enter the online support group. All one needs is access to the internet.
