Message from the Rabbi

Rabbi Best at Tree Let's End the Violence!

Dear Friends,

While I loved the late Charleton Heston's portrayal of Moses, it should serve as no surprise that our politics could not have been more divergent when it came to gun control.  I still have a vivid and chilling recollection of when gun laws came under attack during his tenure as president of the NRA when he commented that any changes to the existing laws would only occur "over my dead body."  While I realize that many who defend the right to bear arms see it as a means of self defense or for hunting, a sport which seems unconscionable to me, too many guns seem to easily pass into hands that show no value for human life.

Several years have elapsed since the actor turned conservative activist has passed and, as we sadly know, gun violence in our world continues to be rife. We need only read the daily papers or watch the news.  And as we well know, the horrors are not restricted to specific areas. The Sandy Hook tragedy, just over a year ago, is not an isolated event.  Schools, shopping malls and city streets have all become arenas in which disturbed human beings carry out their rage.

This Shabbat, Saturday, March 8, the Greenwich Council Against Gun Violence will assemble between 12:30pm and 2:00pm at Town Hall as we will support those who will be biking from Sandy Hook to Washington DC.  I urge you to join us as we pay homage to those who have been the victims of gun violence and demand stringent legislation for gun safety regulation and legislation. For additional information, please see the blurb (on the bottom) of the newsletter.

Let us join hands as we peacefully work to end the violence.

L'Shalom

Rabbi Andy

The Beatles' Purim at GRS!

Friday, March 14, 2014 at 6:30 PM

First Congregational Church

108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich

Join us for a fun and musical Shabbat Service on Friday, March 14 at 6:30 pm and enjoy the GRS Purim Shpiel featuring GRS members and clergy.  Enjoy a kid-friendly Megillah reading, hamantaschen and other Purim treats.

This event is free and open to the community.

mac & cheese Shake, Rattle & Roll Groggers:  Enjoy Purim fun while helping the hungry.  We're going to use edible groggers for Purim, so bring small boxes of cereal or pasta (Kraft macaroni and cheese is perfect) to shake when the Rabbi reads Haman's name.  Afterwards, we'll donate them to help feed the hungry in our community.  Bring a few extra boxes to share in case someone else forgets.

Generation J - Exploring Judaism Together

Generation J is preparing for Purim

This past weekend, our older students helped to create booths for our Purim bazaar on March 16th, while our younger students learned the story of Esther and talked about all of the exciting ways that Jews celebrate Purim. We also had a special guest, Avi Zuckerman, who led our B'nai Mitzvah students in discussing what it means to become a Bat/Bar Mitzvah, and in creating their own personalized yad to use when reading from Torah.

Greenwich Rally to Support the Sandy Hook Ride on Washington
Saturday, March 8, 2014 12:30-2 PM
Greenwich Town Hall
101 Field Point Ave., Greenwich, CT

Please join Rabbi Sklarz and the Greenwich Council Against Gun Violence at the Greenwich Rally to Support the Sandy Hook Ride on Washington at Town Hall onSaturday, March 8, 12:30-2:00pm to honor victims of gun violence and call attention to the need for federal gun safety legislation.

Last March Team 26 rode 400 miles from Sandy Hook to Washington, D.C. in memory of the 26 children and educators who were killed with an assault rifle at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Because Washington has taken no legislative action since the massacre, Team 26 is riding a second time. The Greenwich Council has formed its own Team Greenwich to ride alongside Team 26 from Ridgefield to Greenwich, demonstrating that the "Connecticut effect" is alive and well in Greenwich.

"In 2013 Connecticut passed tough common-sense gun regulations to make our communities safer. Now it's time for Washington to do the same," says Jonathan Perloe, a leader of the Greenwich Council and GRS member.

Scheduled speakers include Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman Jim Himes, CT Attorney General George Jepsen, Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei and Selectman Drew Marzullo. Joining our elected officials will be Rabbi Andrew R. Sklarz, Greenwich Reform Synagogue, and Reverend Maxwell Grant, Second Congregational Church.

In the case of inclement weather, the rally will be held inside Town Hall in the Town Hall Meeting Room.

Be Part of GRS' New and Important Social Action Committee Initiative!

The caring members of our GRS Social Action Committee continually take on projects in order to help those in need, both within our larger community and around the globe.  For years GRS has been collecting and cooking food which the members of the Social Action Committee, and more recently, the students of Gen J, have been serving each month at Inspirica. However, our relationship has recently expanded...

GRS is now "in partnership with Inspirica." Inspirica provides a host of services for those who are, as the motto expresses, journeying from "homelessness to home."  Inspirica's beautiful, modern facility is located on nearby Franklin Street in Stamford, close to the Greenwich border. We are seeking volunteers, adults and mature teens, who can lend their skills in the following areas, including:

  • tutoring
  • babysitting
  • offering children's recreational activities
  • helping prepare those who endeavor to enter the job market
  • in other various realms, including resume writing and interview skills.

We warmly welcome those willing to share their unique ideas and talents in ways not aforementioned, to support those adults and children currently living at Inspirica.  Our GRS Social Action Committee invites you to be a part of this important mitzvah. Please let us know your interest by contacting Laura in the GRS office.

Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to donate and serve food the first Saturday of each month to Inspirica's Women's Shelter. To find out what is needed, you can contact the GRS Office or sign up at Shabbat Services.
