Mishpatim

 (Exodus 24:1-24:18)

In this portion, as the title infers, God gives the people further laws.  They deal with slavery, property, moral behavior, and "cultic rituals."  The Covenant is then reaffirmed.  The portion concludes with the timeless phrase "We will do and we will listen."

Rabbi USE THIS ONE!

Celebrate the Rich and Historic Relationship between the Reform Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King

Dear Friends,

The Reform Movement has long been on the vanguard for social change in both our nation and throughout the globe.

For fifty years, the Religious Action Center of the Reform Movement ("the RAC") and more recently, the Israel Religious Action Center ("IRAC") have fought tirelessly to promote civil rights for all human beings. With headquarters in Washington, DC, "the RAC "educates and mobilizes the Reform Jewish community on legislative and social concerns, going both to Congress and "into the trenches" to advocate for marginalized populations, speak out against discrimination, and bring relief to those in need, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I have had the privilege of bringing groups of teens to "the RAC" for four day seminars as their social consciousness was raised to the important responsibilities in front of us, and I look forward to doing so again in the future.

Our Reform Movement played a pivotal role during the Civil Rights Movement, marching beside and championing Dr. Martin Luther King. I invite you to gain a closer insight into this relationship this coming Shabbat and view a special video from the URJ Biennial, which celebrates "the RAC's" 50th anniversary. This will be an important eye opener for anyone affiliated with the Reform Movement, and for those who wish to have a greater sense of who we are and what we stand for.

I look forward to our sharing this Shabbat, as we learn about and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and his relationship with our movement.

L'Shalom,

Rabbi Andy

On Sunday, January 26th from 3-4:30 pm, GRS is excited to join with UJA/JCC of Greenwich to bring Mainstages - a children's theatre group specialized in the movement of Performance Judaism - to Greenwich for an interactive performance of a PJ Library classic - Estie the Mensch. Teaching artists use puppetry, storytelling, and performance to bring high quality Jewish literature to life. Participants create wacky characters, explore their bodies, and get in costume to re-enact tales from Jewish Folklore. The result is an energetic, fast-paced connection to the values of our Jewish stories. $12 per person or $50 per family includes light dinner. Best for ages 3 and up.
