 Vayechi

 (Genesis 47:28-5)

Jacob gives his final blessing to Joseph's sons, favoring the younger, Ephraim, over the older, Menasheh. Jacob gathers his sons to deliver a final poetic testament, and enjoins them to bury him in the cave of Machpelah in Canaan, the burial site of his parents and grandparents. Upon their return from the burial, the brothers persuade (trick) Joseph into swearing not to take revenge on them, although Joseph shows no such intent. The book of Genesis concludes with the death of Joseph.

Message from the Cantor

Cantor Sabrina LiptonDear Congregants:

I will be participating in the "We Bring Light" service at 7:00 pm on December 14th at The Church of Christ the Healer, 20 Brookdale Road (corner of High Ridge Road) Stamford.

This is an interfaith service being done to remember the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School, one year after the tragic event.

I encourage all to attend and show that we at GRS have not forgotten the traumatic shooting that took the lives of so many innocent people. You can CLICK HERE for more information on this meaningful event.

I hope this final night of Chanukah is filled with joy for you and your families.

Most sincerely,

Cantor Sabrina

Generation J - Exploring Judaism Together

We started a new unit last weekend at Gen J with all of our students learning about the mitzvot that make a person a mensch. We know that a mitzvah is not simply a good deed, but that the word mitzvah literally means commandment. Sometimes we have to look carefully to find the good deed in a commandment. However, the mitzvot that we are studying in this unit are the ones that can most easily be understood as good deeds. Our first mitzvah of the unit is bikkur cholim: visiting the sick. Our tradition tells us that visiting a sick person takes away 1/60 of his or her illness. How does your visiting a sick person help if you are not a doctor or a nurse? What else can you do to help those who are sick? These are the questions that we hope to answer next week at Gen J. Stay tuned for our students' ideas!

For more information about Gen J or any of our youth programing, please contact Eliana Hall, Director of Education, at eliana@grs.org.
