 Miketz

 (Genesis 41:1-44:17)

Joseph interprets Pharoah's dreams and saves Egypt from a great famine. As a reward, Pharoah appoints Joseph and his Royal Vizier. Meanwhile, in Canaan, Jacob sends ten of his sons to Egypt to buy food, leaving Benjamin behind. The portion concludes with Joseph testing the righteousness of his brothers as he plays the part of the Egyptian ruler. It is Judah who causes the brothers to pass the test.

This Chanukah Let Us Bring Warmth and Light

Dear Friends,

Albeit a bit early, last Shabbat we all enjoyed a gala Chanukah celebration, GRS style, as we joined together for our lively service and festive dinner. On Sunday, the celebration continued as our students of Generation J enjoyed a fun filled morning of Chanukah replete with a cake decorating contest, singing, latkes and of course candle lighting.

Chanukah and Thanksgiving, which will both converge this week, call upon us to recognize the abundance of blessings we have in our lives. As we know Judaism instructs us that true appreciation is evidenced when we extend ourselves to others. In other words, it is not enough to thank God for our blessings, we must always be cognizant of those who lack what we are privileged to enjoy.

What a gift it is to be in the position to give to others.  This past weekend, we experienced the first blast of cold air and even flakes of snow. With winter upon us, we need to be conscious of the many in our midst who who do not have proper clothing. Over the coming weeks, we ask you to kindly bring warm clothing of all sizes to the temple office so that we can distribute them to the needy in our community. While is may be a small gesture on our part, it will make a world of difference to those who live without the basic necessities we take for granted.

May we truly celebrate our blessings on Chanukah and Thanksgiving, by extending warmth and light to others!

L'shalom

Rabbi Andy

Happy Chanukah, Gen J! Our Chanukah bash was so much fun! The cake-decorating was certainly the highlight of our celebration, with cakes decorated to look like chanukiot (Chanukah menorahs), Chanukah gifts, and Judah Maccabee himself. Some were even too festive to describe! Then, of course, we ate our creations, along with latkes and applesauce and gelt. There was music and dreidel and candle-lighting, too. Most importantly, we were all together as one Gen J family, with students, parents, and teachers coming together to make the day terrific!
