A Message from Rabbi Sklarz
|

A View From the Other Side
Dear Friends,
While so much of my life as a rabbi involves pastoral work, and I spend untold hours by the bedsides of those who are ill, or those who are contending with pain, I am convinced that God provides opportunities for each of us to experience life from various perspectives. For this reason I believe that last week it was deemed that I spend the days leading up to the 4th of July, a relatively quieter time in temple life, in the hospital.
It has been some years since I spent so many days in a hospital bed dealing with uncertainties, and as always, it has provided a time of reflection and learning.
While I am not a stranger to hospitals, my time in the ER, and various wards is always the great equalizer to me. As John Gunther once wrote the words, "Death Be Not Proud," we well know, physical, emotional, or spiritual challenge is not relegated to a specific group. My time in the hospital, whether in my capacity as a rabbi or patient, is a constant reminder that all humanity is one family and that it is our responsibility to care for others. While witnessing the difficulties of others beckons us to reach out, let us be equally cognizant of how far reaching a smile, a caring word, or an expression of compassion always is.
Thanks to the miracles of God, modern medicine, skilled professionals, and the love I have received from so many, I am healing and look forward to seeing all of you soon. May we all know health of body, mind and spirit, and ever be ready to reach out to our fellow human beings - all children of the one and Eternal God.
L'Shalom,
Rabbi Andy
