Matot-Masei

(Numbers 30:2-36:13)

Matot reports the laws, given to the Israelites, for making vows.  It also contains a description of the Israelites' war against the Midianites, including the distribution of the booty.  The portion concludes with Moses resolving a request by the Gadites and Reubenites for the lands of Jazer and Gilead.  Masei recounts forty years of Mas'ey, or "journeys," by the Israelites from Egypt to the land of Israel.  Moses provides instructions for conquering the land, defining its borders, and dividing it among the tribes.  He also defines provisions for setting up six cities of refuge where those accused of manslaughter may go for safety and a fair trial.  The book of Numbers concludes with a counterprotest regarding the daughters of Zelophehad and a further clarification of the Torah's laws of inheritance.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Rabbi USE THIS ONE!

FOCUS on the NEW GRS SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Jewish Camp Model: An Exciting Approach to Jewish Education

The "camp-like" approach to Jewish education, students are actively involved in the learning process and create a community of close relationships. Our new Sunday school program has been designed to offer an environment that engages the student through meaningful and enjoyable project based learning with peers, faculty (including the madrichim or teen aides, and our Israeli emissaries) and clergy - "a community of friends." On-going weekly activities that involve the entire school (or are specifically geared for lower grades, K-3 or upper grades, 4-7).

As Judaism is a living tradition, students will experience our curriculum of Jewish Ethics through an exploration of
Mitzvot (commandments) and  Middot (values). These concepts will be approached through various lenses including Torah, history, prayer, and ritual, and students will be able to express their learning through various modalities. The project-based activities will enable students to select an area of interest and demonstrate what they have learned.

Beginning with an optional breakfast at 9:00 am, our day will formally begin at 9:30 with a full school Havdalah service and an introduction to the values oriented theme of the day. Students (in grade clusters of K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7) will meet with their "homeroom" teacher, enjoy project-based learning activities with combined classes (assisted by the madrichim), as well as group time with the Israeli emissaries, music, and Tefilah (prayer). The morning will culminate with a full school closing assembly.

Periodic "after school specials" will be planned for various grade levels, including high school students.

Interim Educational Director, Eliana Hall and I are looking forward to bringing Jewish camp spirit to GRS!

L'Shalom,

Rabbi Andy

The Lectures should be "Stand-Alone" so come to as many or as few as you can.

If, possible, come to class with a copy of Genesis, it  will be interesting if we have several different Translations and can compare during the discussion.  However, even if you don't have a copy, please come!!!
