Balak

(Numbers 22:2-25:9)

Balak, king of Moab, summons Balaam, the necromancer, to curse Israel before their coming battle.  As the tale develops, Balaam's donkey talks, an angel of God appears, and Balaam blesses Israel ("How goodly are your tents, O Jacob...") instead of cursing them.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Rabbi USE THIS ONE!

Dear Friends,

We are soon to unveil the full details of the Reboot of the GRS Religious School, but suffice to say, thanks to our dedicated Education Committee, the creativity of Educational Consultant, Wendy Grinberg, and you - the parents of our students, Interim Educational Director, Eliana Hall, and I are so excited about what is in store for the 2013-14 academic year.

The voices of our parents and children have been heard, and the past months have been devoted to creating a program that will energize our school and truly engage our students.

To this end, our Sunday program has been revamped to reflect many of the beloved experiential learning components of the Jewish camping model. Within a framework which will include full school/multi-level opening and closing assemblies, our curriculum will introduce a variety of compelling themes to our children and invite them to participate in "project based" learning activities. Our students will be provided options for personal expression as they study topics reflecting the priorities expressed by you, our parents. Indeed we believe this dynamic approach will foster a greater sense of Jewish community and identity.

Our mid-week Hebrew program will also offer a brand new learning experience. Replacing the traditional classroom format, you will soon receive registration forms asking you to select a convenient time for your child to come to our GRS office for individual instructional blocks with a Hebrew teacher.

In addition, we will be offering a host of informal activities on the weekend for our children which will provide them additional opportunities to socialize with friends and members of our GRS community.

Stay tuned. Details will be forthcoming, but be assured, the best is yet to come!

With great excitement for all that is in store,

Rabbi Andy

GRS Young Families Initiative

GRS is pleased to announce a new initiative beginning on July 1, aimed at young families, offering special pricing and more affordable membership and school tuition for families with young children.

Any new (non member) family with at least one adult under age 40 (excluding adult children), or at least one child in the third grade or under, are eligible to participate in this program.

If you know of anyone who has been thinking about starting their children in religious school, this is a great time for them to get in touch.

We'll have coffee, cake, and correct colors!

Please bring 3 favorite solid color tops with you. We'll share a fun evening, and you may go home ready to be more beautiful than you ever imagined!

Adult Ed Summer Lecture Series

GRS Adult Education will continue to meet during the summer. We will be showing DVD Lectures on the Book of Genesis.  The lectures will be followed each week by a brief discussion. CLICK HERE for the tentative schedule.

The Lectures should be "Stand-Alone" so come to as many or as few as you can.

If, possible, come to class with a copy of Genesis, it  will be interesting if we have several different Translations and can compare during the discussion.  However, even if you don't have a copy, please come!!!

We will be meeting at the GRS office 1037 East Putnam Avenue, Riverside, CT 06878 at 9:30 AM.

Tour de Shuls
Sunday, June 23, 2013

The fourth annual Tour de Shuls CT will be held on Sunday, June23rd.  More than simply a bike ride, Tour de Shuls is a community event to support the Camp Ramah Tikvah program and Camp Eisner and Crane Lake Chazak program.  The Tikvah (Hope) and Chazak (Strength) programs serve Jewish children with developmental disabilities and other physical challenges. Participating in the Tour enables Tikvah and Chazak campers to experience the joys and
camaraderie of Jewish summer camp -- swimming, soccer, arts&crafts,
singing around the campfire, celebrating Shabbat--by providing schlarships to defray the costs of attending camp.
