Torah Portion May 11, 2013

Bamidbar
(Numbers 1:1-4:20)
We begin the book of Numbers. As the people embark on their journey through the wilderness, they take a great census. The text then lists the genealogies of the tribes. The portion concludes with a discussion about the important Kohathites, whose primary responsibility was to carry the sacred objects.

Welcome Eliana Hall as GRS Interim Director of Education
Dear Friends,
Allow me to introduce you to Eliana Hall, who will serve as our Interim Director of Education for the 2013 - 2014 academic year. As part of the Reboot of the GRS Religious School, Eliana will work with the program currently being developed by our Educational Consultant, Wendy Grinberg. Eliana will assume her role in mid-June.
A graduate of the Rhea Hirsch School of Education of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles (as well as the Jerusalem campus), and having served as a Clinical Pastoral Intern of Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, Eliana holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Mills College in Oakland California. With a wealth of formal and informal teaching and youth experiences, creative programing, curriculum development of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, organizational and administrative skills, and an upbeat personality, we look forward to Eliana as part of our team for the coming year.
In the coming months, I will be sharing more details as the Reboot of the GRS Religious School unfolds. Indeed there is much excitement on the horizon!
L'Shalom,
Rabbi Andy

B'nai Mitzvah Profile - Sarah Stone Saturday, May 11, 2013
| | |
Sarah Alice Stone, the daughter of Robert and Tara Stone, and sister of Henry (18) and Jacob (15), will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, May 11th. Sarah is a seventh grader at Central Middle School where she enjoys all her classes, but especially writing and consumer science.
When Sarah is not at school, you may find her at piano lessons, working on a Girl Scout project, writing a story or composing a new song on her ukulele. There is also a good chance you will find her with friends at Robek's. Most other times she is lightening her family's heart with her fun-loving spirit and wild imagination. She counts her hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up again as one of her proudest achievements.
For her Mitzvah project, Sarah wanted to share her love of reading with senior citizens. On Saturdays she brings a bag of word search puzzles to The River House and works through them with a table of very special ladies. They love the puzzles and are very sweet to Sarah. On Wednesday afternoons she heads to the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home where she visits Karen, a lovely older woman who loves to read as much as Sarah. They talk about favorite books, movies, art, travel and growing up. Karen is very kind and encouraging to Sarah.
Sarah loves Judaism and is very excited about this important step in her religious life. She has loved coming to GRS since she was a toddler; it has been like a second home to her. Over the years, Sarah has enjoyed all her wonderful teachers and looks forward to being a classroom aide herself. Sarah also plans to join the Youth Group and continue her Jewish studies.

Tour de Shuls Sunday, June 23, 2013
| | |
The fourth annual Tour de Shuls CT will be held on Sunday, June23rd. More than simply a bike ride, Tour de Shuls is a community event to support the Camp Ramah Tikvah program and Camp Eisner and Crane Lake Chazak program. The Tikvah (Hope) and Chazak (Strength) programs serve Jewish children with developmental disabilities and other physical challenges. Participating in the Tour enables Tikvah and Chazak campers to experience the joys and
camaraderie of Jewish summer camp -- swimming, soccer, arts&crafts,
singing around the campfire, celebrating Shabbat--by providing schlarships to defray the costs of attending camp.

Jewish Family Services of Greenwich is offering the following programs, support groups and volunteer opportunities (For more information or to register for any of the following, please visit www.jfsgreenwich.org or call 203-622-1881): JFS Support Groups: ($20 per session: Sliding Scale fees apply).
CHILDREN OF DIVORCE GROUP (11 - 14 YEAR OLDS)
This 8-week support group is for young people in grades 6 - 8 whose lives have been impacted by divorce. These groups use age appropriate discussion, role-plays, games, and art to help teens cope with feelings of loss, anger, and sadness. Here at JFS, we encourage group members to discuss their feelings, normalize divorce as a common occurrence, and help children better understand the process of divorce. Regardless of whether the child has reacted strongly or mildly from the changes in the family, they can benefit from this experience.
Facilitated by Jan Mittleman, LCSW.
Wednesdays, 5:30pm - 6:45pm
A NEW GROUP IS STARTING IN JUNE
"Surviving and Succeeding as a Stepmother"

Please join our confidential, 8-week support group, where you can feel free to talk about your personal challenges in being a stepmother. We will try to give you the gifts of understanding, validation and appreciation that the stepmother rarely receives. Facilitated by Linda Schlapfer, LMFT
WHEN: Eight Wednesday Mornings - beginning June 12
TIME: 12:15pm - 1:15pm
WHERE: Jewish Family Services of Greenwich, One Holly Hill Lane
$160 for the group: sliding scale fees available
