Torah Portion
January 26, 2013

Beshalach
(Exodus 13:17-17:16)

The exodus from Egypt begins.  Pharoah, in a change of heart, pursues the Israelites to the Sea of Reeds.  Then, God parts the waters, allowing the Israelites to pass to freedom.  The Egyptians drown as the waters return.  In celebration of their freedom, Moses and Miriam lead the people in the poem known as "The Song at the Sea."  As the scene changes, the people rebel against Moses and Aaron.  The portion concludes with the attack by Amalek, who shall ever be known as Israel's antagonist.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Rabbi USE THIS ONE! Dear Friends,

This Erev Shabbat, Friday, January 25 at 6:30 pm, our service will take place around the dinner table for our Tu-b'Shevat seder.  In the tradition, Passover, with Haggadah in hand, we will experience the first signs of spring in the land of Israel.  Together we will celebrate the bounty of the earth with rituals and special fruits native to Israel, and welcome Shabbat.  Of course, Cantor Lipton and I will provide an opportunity for both the Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, and the recitation of Kaddish.

Enjoy the warmth of family and friends on Shabbat, and an Israel-style dinner.

Rabbi Andy

Greenwich Historical Society

The Science of History: Tree Rings and the History They Reveal

Neil Pederson, PhD, Lamont Research Assistant Professor, Tree Ring Laboratory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.

In celebration of the Jewish New Year for Trees, Tu B'Shevat, Dr. Pederson will lecture on how ancient trees and timbers from human structures are used to broaden our understanding of history. From the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire to the construction of buildings and boats locally and globally, trees are the environmental historians, which reveal events long faded from human memory and historical documents; including how the tree ring cores taken from the Bush-Holley house reveal its construction history.

Sponsored by the Greenwich Historical Society, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, the Bruce Museum, and the Greenwich Reform Synagogue.

Doors open at 6:30; lecture begins at 7:00 pm.  Event will be held at the Greenwich Historical Society, 39 Strickland Road, Cos Cob.

Admission is free but reservations are suggested. Please call 203-869-6899, Ext. 10

Purim Actors & Costumes Needed!!

Purim Shpiel No Purim is ever complete without a Purim shpiel - a play of the Megillah (story of Purim).  But a shpiel needs actors!  We've gotten a few volunteers, but we would love more involvement!  There will be no memorization of lines, as narrators will be on hand for those who are shy to speak.  We also will not need much rehearsal time for us to present a short, entertaining re-enactment of the Purim story.  Adults or kids who are interested, please contact Stephanie at stephanieglaser@grs.org.

Also for the Purim shpiel, children and adult costumes are needed, including dress-up clothing, funny hats, glasses and masks.

Costumes for boys/men are especially needed.

Thank you!
