Torah Portion December 15, 2012
| Miketz (Genesis 41:1-44:17)
Joseph interprets Pharoah's dreams and saves Egypt from a great famine. As a reward, Pharoah appoints Joseph as his Royal Vizier. Meanwhile, in Canaan, Jacob sends ten of his sons to Egypt to buy food, leaving Benjamin behind. The portion concludes with Joseph testing the righteousness of his brothers as he plays the part of the Egyptian ruler. It is Judah who causes the brothers to pass the test.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Let's Share Our Blessings with Others!
Dear Friends,
Come spread the joy of Chanukah with GRS and Jewish Family Services this Sunday at 2:00 pm at Nathaniel Witherell located at 70 Parsonage Road, in Greenwich. Cantor Lipton and I invite those of all ages to join us as we visit with the residents, entertain them with song, and share the home-made challah baked by our GRS Sisterhood.
As I discussed several weeks back, in mid-November, Cantor Sabrina and I made our first trip to the Far Rockaway section of Queens to distribute the many donations you provided for those who were so devastated by Hurricane Sandy. We plan on making another trip during the third week of December and we ask you to continue bringing non-perishable foods, clothing, home supplies and holiday gifts for children to our office.
We have so very much to be thankful for. Let us extend our good fortune with others!
B'Shalom,
Rabbi Andy
Rabbi Andrew R. Sklarz, MA, MSW, RJE
With the goal of creating a GRS Memory Box, kindly send your photos, artifacts and personal pieces (in prose or poetry) which share significant moments in our history to Denise at denise@grs.org.

Tu B'Shevat Event Thursday, January 24, 2013 Greenwich Historical Society | | |
The Science of History: Tree Rings and the History They Reveal
Neil Pederson, PhD, Lamont Research Assistant Professor, Tree Ring Laboratory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.
In celebration of the Jewish New Year for Trees, Tu B'Shevat, Dr. Pederson will lecture on how ancient trees and timbers from human structures are used to broaden our understanding of history. From the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire to the construction of buildings and boats locally and globally, trees are the environmental historians, which reveal events long faded from human memory and historical documents; including how the tree ring cores taken from the Bush-Holley house reveal its construction history.
Sponsored by the Greenwich Historical Society, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, the Bruce Museum, and the Greenwich Reform Synagogue.
Doors open at 6:30; lecture begins at 7:00 pm. Event will be held at the Greenwich Historical Society, 39 Strickland Road, Cos Cob.
Admission is free but reservations are suggested. Please call 203-869-6899, Ext. 10
