Torah Portion
December 8, 2012
Vayeshev
(Genesis 37:1-40:23)

The Joseph narratived begins.  After annoying his brothers with his divine premonitions of being their ruler, Joseph is sold by them into slavery.  In a strange interlude, Tamar conceives twin sons by her father-in-law, Judah.  Meanwhile, Joseph prospers in Egypt until he is framed by Potiphar's wife and is thrown in jail.  While incarcerated, he correctly interprets the dreams of Pharoah's cupbearer and baker.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Rabbi USE THIS ONE!

As We Experience the Joy of Chanukah, Let Us Share Our Blessings!

Dear Friends,

Once again, our GRS celebration of Chanukah will be a Shabbat not to be missed!

This Friday night we will usher in the Festival of Lights with a fun-filled musical service for all ages, replete with a host of surprises! Our celebration will be enhanced by a wonderful Chanukah dinner and entertainment for all. Don't forget to bring your Chanukiah (menorah)! If you have not already made your reservation, please contact Denise at the temple office.

Judaism well instructs us that as we experience joy in our lives, we must ever be cognizant of those who lack our good fortune. As I discussed several weeks back, Cantor Sabrina and I saw first hand the hardships faced by so many as a result of Hurricane Sandy, when we brought your donations to the people living in the Far Rockaway section of Queens. With the holiday season upon us, Cantor and I will be making another trip to Far Rockaway  and we ask you once again to kindly bring warm clothing (for babies, children and adults), non-perishable food, kitchen and cleaning supplies to our office. I have no doubt that there are many children who would love to receive toys, especially at this time of year.

On Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 please join us as we bring holiday cheer (and Challah, prepared by the Sisterhood) to the residents of Nathaniel Witherell. Our visit will not be lengthy, but will mean so much to those who are elderly or ill. For further information, please contact me.

Wishing all a very bright and beautiful Chanukah,

B'Shalom,

Rabbi Andy

Greenwich Historical Society

The Science of History: Tree Rings and the History They Reveal

Neil Pederson, PhD, Lamont Research Assistant Professor, Tree Ring Laboratory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.

In celebration of the Jewish New Year for Trees, Tu B'Shevat, Dr. Pederson will lecture on how ancient trees and timbers from human structures are used to broaden our understanding of history. From the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire to the construction of buildings and boats locally and globally, trees are the environmental historians, which reveal events long faded from human memory and historical documents; including how the tree ring cores taken from the Bush-Holley house reveal its construction history.

Sponsored by the Greenwich Historical Society, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, the Bruce Museum, and the Greenwich Reform Synagogue.

Doors open at 6:30; lecture begins at 7:00 pm.  Event will be held at the Greenwich Historical Society, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich.

Admission is free but reservations are suggested. Please call 203-869-6899, Ext. 10
